Parking on a Sunday in a space in Madrid’s Regulated Parking Service (SER) could no longer be free in certain parts of the city. The modification of the Sustainable Mobility Ordinance contemplates extending payment hours in areas where it is especially difficult to find a place. The possibility does not imply that all parking meters will work every Sunday.
The measure will depend on the needs of each area and a specific authorization. There is also no specific date for the first Sunday of charging, so it is not a general change that drivers should consider applied throughout the capital.
In which areas could there be a charge for parking on Sundays?
The criterion will be the pressure on parking. The expansion is planned for places with high commercial, cultural, sports, tourism or leisure activity, where the arrival of vehicles makes it difficult for residents to find a space.
This allows you to act on specific areas and moments. It does not mean that all neighborhoods with green or blue squares will have the same payment schedule during the weekendnor does it still allow us to indicate a closed list of streets where the charge will be charged on Sundays.
To launch it, the district will have to request the expansion and the municipal Mobility area will have to authorize it. The measure is considered non-permanent and linked to the days or circumstances that justify extending the service.
The hours that could become paid
The possibility of extending the SER extends to Sundays and holidays, but also to other periods that are outside the usual hours. Among them are Saturday afternoons after 3:00 p.m. and hours after 9:00 p.m. on weekdays.
The scope will depend on what is approved for each case. That the ordinance allows the hours to be extended does not mean that all these bands are activated at the same time nor that the extension affects all districts equally.
What is missing to know when you will have to pay?
For the driver, the decisive information will be What streets are included?on what dates the measure will be applied and for how many hours the regulated parking will operate. Without this specification, it cannot be taken for granted that parking next Sunday will have a cost in a certain area.
It is also convenient to separate this possibility from the extension of the SER to new neighborhoods. Incorporate streets into regulated parking and expanding their hours are different decisions. The arrival of parking meters in a neighborhood does not imply, by itself, that they will be charged there on Sundays or holidays.
