Meteor illuminates the sky of Puerto Rico with green, blue and orange flashes

The night sky over Puerto Rico lit up for seconds on Wednesday night, when a bright meteor streaked through the atmosphere at 10:33 p.m., dazzling observers across the island with green, blue and orange flashes.

“It was a space rock, probably about 3 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) in diameter, disintegrating through the atmosphere and was seen facing south, lighting up the entire sky for a few moments”said Eddie Irizarry, vice president of the Caribbean Astronomy Society (SAC).

According to Irizarry, observers in various towns on the island were amazed by the “fireball” whose colors suggest that the rock contained metals and sodium, among other minerals.

The organization indicated that, if some fragment reached the surface, it must have occurred over the sea, further south of Red Cape.

The SAC explained that although the trajectory showed that it was a sporadic meteor, during the remainder of October as well as in November, some other glowing celestial body could be seen, since on these dates the Taurids, which are bright meteors, are observed.
