For a person, mowing the lawn can be a relatively routine task. For a robot, on the other hand, a garden is a small maze. There are trees, flower beds, bushes, terraces, paths, slopes and narrow corners. And, unlike the floor of a house, The terrain does not always offer a regular surface on which to move. Turning that landscape into a map and navigating it autonomously is precisely the challenge posed by Roborock’s new robotic lawnmower.

The company has presented the RockNeo Q2 LiDAR at IFA 2026, a model with which it expands its range of outdoor robots and brings navigation technology to the garden that is already common in its home cleaning devices. Its objective is simple:Maintaining the lawn is no longer a task that the owner has to periodically add to his list of obligations.

The main difference of the RockNeo Q2 LiDAR is precisely how it is oriented. The Sentisphere LiDAR system allows the robot to recognize its surroundings and build an intelligent map of the garden without using a boundary wire or RTK station.. From this map, the lawnmower can move autonomously and organize its routes to systematically cover different areas of grass.

The approach is especially interesting in gardens that do not have a large uniform extension. The RockNeo Q2 LiDAR is ready to circulate on hallways barely 60 centimeters wide and overcome slopes of up to 45%. That is, it is not only designed for those large rectangles of grass that seem designed expressly for a robotic lawnmower, but also for spaces in which the terrain forces you to continually change direction.

And there is another area where these devices usually have difficulties: the edges. A robot can perfectly navigate a surface and yet leave a narrow strip of grass uncut. The RockNeo Q2 LiDAR incorporates a three-blade cutting system and can approach up to about 3 centimeters from the edge, with the aim of reducing that margin of grass which then forces you to finish the job manually.

Once the map is created, the user does not need to accompany the robot during its journeys. From the Roborock application you can manage different cutting areas and establish routines so that garden maintenance becomes a scheduled task. The idea is for the lawnmower to work discreetly in the background and keep the grass within defined parameters without having to be aware of each cycle.

The charging station is also part of that approach. It features a WiFi booster to support a stable connection between the mower and the app, while anti-theft protection features add a layer of security to a device that, by definition, spends much of its time outdoors. The environment is also not a problem for the robot itself. The RockNeo Q2 LiDAR is IPX6 waterproof certified and can be integrated into connected home systems compatible with Alexa and Google Home.

With this model, Roborock thus expands the scenario in which it applies its commitment to autonomous navigation. After robot vacuum cleaners and, now, devices intended for cleaning pools, the garden becomes another space in which the company tries to convey the same idea: that the robot is not limited to executing a task, but rather be able to interpret the environment and decide how to navigate it.

In the case of grass, that difference can be especially important. A garden is not a room with four walls or a perfectly delimited surface. It can change daily, depending on the climate and its inhabitants (humans and animals, above and below the surface). That a machine can build by itself a map of that scenario, recognize its limits and autonomously maintain a cutting routine is, in a way, turn a garden into a navigation problem. And solve it.
