Winter is intensified with colder and 11 communities on snow alert or heavy rains

Winter time will intensify this Friday in large regions of the country. A total of 11 Autonomous Communities are under war notice, rain, storms, wind and strong waves. Meanwhile, the thermometers will register temperatures below 10 degrees in much of the north and areas of the southeast interior.

Cantabria is on orange alert by snowfallalong with eight other communities of the northern and northeast peninsular half at yellow level. Besides, Balearic Islands and Andalusia are also under notice due to heavy rains, maritime temporal and strong winds of up to 70 km/h in the Andalusian regionaccording to the forecast of the State Meteorology Agency (Aemet).

The orange alert will be in force in Cantabria throughout the day in the Central Zone and the Villaverde Valley, with Snow accumulations up to 5 centimeters in 24 hours from 700 meters. In higher levels, the thicknesses will be even greater. Eight other communities are at yellow level by snowfall with moderate risk for some activities. It’s about Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra, La Rioja, Valencian Community and Catalonia, the latter also in warning for strong waves.

In Andalusia, Yellow notices affect several provinces for rains, storms, winds and maritime temporalwith accumulations of up to 15 liters per square meter in an hour in areas such as the Sevillian countryside, the Cadiz coast, the Strait, Granada, Almería and the Malaga axarchy. In 12 hours, up to 60 liters per square meter could be collected. In Balearicsthe yellow alert is due to rainfall that will reach 20 liters per square meter in an hour and waves of up to 3 meters, especially in Mallorca.

The snowfall will also affect mountain environments such as the Cordillera de Asturias y Picos de Europa, Liébana, Cantabria del Ebro and El Pyrineo, with accumulations of 5 centimeters in 24 hours from 900 meters.

In Teruel, the areas of Albarracín, Jiloca, Gúdar and Maestrazgo will see 10 centimeters thicknesses from 900-1000 meters, the same as in the Serranía de Cuenca and the Parameras of Molina (Guadalajara). In northern Burgos, snow could accumulate from 800 meters with thickness up to 2 centimeters, while inside Castellón and Interior North of Valencia accumulations are expected from 900-1000 meters.

Finally, Almeria Levante and the west area will be on yellow alert for wind gusts up to 70 km/h, further complicating the day in the peninsular south.

Temperatures will go down in the Balearic Islands, the northern half and the third this peninsular, notably in areas of the Northeast. It will be colder in Teruel (4 degrees) and Ávila, Cuenca and Soria (6)and more heat in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (21), and Malaga and Melilla (19).

The time for the weekend

Saturday will be a truce day regarding rainfall, although It will still rain in the Cantabrian, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands with a snow level around 700 meters.

In the rest of the country, the skies will be clear and the presence of cold air will cause more intense and generalized frosts than the previous day, with minimum temperatures of -2 to -4ºC on the northern plateau and the moors of the center. In cities such as León, Soria and Palencia, minimums of up to -4ºC could be registered.

On Sunday the temperatures will rise slightly, although the frosts will continue in large areas of the north and the downtown area. In turn, rains are expected in the Cantabrian and in some areas of the southern peninsular, before the arrival of a new Atlantic storms from Monday, which will bring new rainfall to much of the territory.
