TikTok launches Whee, a new photo app that seeks to compete with Instagram

TikTok, the popular social media platformknown for its short and dynamic videos, has taken another step in its expansion by launching Whee, a new photo sharing application. Developed by ByteDance, the Chinese company behind TikTok, Whee seeks to compete directly with Instagram by offering a novel way to keep users connected.

Launched in 2016, TikTok has captured the attention of users around the world, including Spain, thanks to its interactive format and the ability to make any content viral. The platform currently has 1 billion monthly active users and shows no signs of stopping its growth.

The new Whee app, which was initially rumored under the name ‘TikTok Photos’, was last updated on Google Play on June 7. In the store description, it is noted that Whee is “a new social app created to keep you connected with your close friends through life’s spontaneous moments.” Additionally, it is mentioned: “Capture and share real-life photos that only your friends will be able to see, and be your most authentic self.” The description concludes by stating: “Whee is the best place for great friends to share important moments in their lives.”

Screenshots available on Google Play Store show a photo viewer, a friends list for messaging, and a photo feed. Many photo captions highlight how these features allow for a more intimate connection with friends.

This isn’t ByteDance’s first foray into Instagram-inspired apps. In April, the company launched TikTok Notes, a platform with a similar approach. Whee is now available for Android devices at “more than a dozen countries”although it has not yet reached Spain or the United States, according to Android Police.
