2024 has ended, and with it an intense meteorological year that has been marked by meteorological instabilitylike, of course, the great episode of torrential rains caused as a consequence of the ‘cold drop’ or DANA that hit the Valencian Community, and part of Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia, during the past month of October and left more than 200 deaths.
In this way, the second day of 2025 will be marked, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET)by a series of significant phenomena, among which the “freezing, dense and persistent” fogs in the southeast quadrant, areas of the plateaus, Ebro valley and depressions in the northeast. Furthermore, the moderate frosts in large areas of the northern half of the peninsula and east of the southern plateauwhich can become “strong” in the Pyrenees and in the Central and Iberian Systems.
Temperatures rise, although the cold persists
The AEMET predicts that during today’s session the slight increases in maximum temperatureswhich will be even greater in the eastern part of the Peninsula and in different parts of the Ebro and the Northern Plateau.
For their part, it is expected that the Minimum temperatures will also increase in the northwest of the peninsula, although it will be locally more pronounced in Galicia and Asturiasand will go down in the Southern Plateau and in the east of the peninsula.
In this way, the AEMET ensures that the Frosts “will gain extension and intensity” in the interior of the Peninsula and will affect most of the interior areas of the northern half of the peninsula, east of the Southern Plateau and southeastern mountain ranges. Furthermore, the frosts will be “strong” in the Pyrenees and in the Central and Iberian Systems.
The rains subside in part of the territory, although they are not ruled out in the Canary Islands
The AEMET assures that the DANA that has crossed Spain these days, and that affected the east of the peninsula and the Balearic archipelago, during today will move into the interior of Algeriaso the probability of showers and sporadic and isolated storms in the area will subside and reduce progressively during the day, affecting only the sea, the Balearic archipelago and Melilla.
For its part, “stable weather” is expected in the rest of the countryalthough with abundant low morning cloudiness in the southeast quadrant, both Plateaus, in the bed of the Ebro and in depressions in the northeast, leaving mists and fogs “in large areas” and that could be “cool, locally dense and persistent”.
Nevertheless, The AEMET warns of the approach of an Atlantic front that will promote a cloudy environment and that will spread until it affects the northern third of the peninsula, leaving weak rainfall in the extreme northwest, although without ruling it out in the extreme north. For its part, Cloudy intervals are expected in the Canary Islands, with the possibility of some “weak and scattered” precipitation in the east of the mountainous islands.
Intense gusts of wind in the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia
The State Meteorological Agency assures that during today Light winds from the south and west will predominate in the northern half of the peninsulawhich will be more intense in the Cantabrian Sea and Galicia, with probable strong intervals in the northwest of this community.
For its part, in the rest of the country, light easterly winds will predominate, moderate on Mediterranean coasts and tending to the west, except in the Strait, where a moderate easterly wind will remain. So, A light easterly wind is expected in the Canary Islands.
