Naturgy invests 330 million in the transformation of six wind farms

Naturgy will invest 330 million euros in the technological transformation of six of its wind farms within the framework of its commitment to innovation and energy transitionthe company has reported.

These projects contemplate the replacement of a total of 274 wind turbines with more modern and efficient machines, which will allow the number of equipment to be significantly reduced, maintaining the installed power and significantly improving energy performance.

The repowering will allow the number of wind turbines to be reduced from 274 to 40, maintain the installed power and increase energy production by 75%. They incorporate battery storage systems with a total capacity of 26 MW and 94 MWh, and an autonomy of up to four hours, which reinforces the contribution of these installations to the flexibility and stability of the system.

With these actions, Naturgy advances in its strategy for modernizing renewable assets, aimed at increasing the production of clean energy, optimizing existing infrastructure and reducing environmental impact, contributing to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.

Naturgy highlights that it has extensive experience in the development of repowering projects, especially in Galicia, where it is currently promoting the modernization of the Monte Redondo, As Somozas and Novo wind farms. The company was also a pioneer in this area with the repowering of the Cabo Vilano wind farm in 2016, where it managed to improve energy production by significantly reducing the number of wind turbines and the visual impact of the installation.

Repowering, key to the future

For years, wind energy development has been measured in new parks, new sites and new installed capacity. But an increasingly relevant part of the energy transition is taking place far from the maps that indicate future renewable installations.

According to experts, the next major transformation of the sector is precisely in those parks that have been producing electricity for decades and that now, thanks to technological advances, can see their infrastructure modernized by using fewer wind turbines and making better use of existing infrastructure to obtain more renewable energy. Wind repowering demonstrates that the energy transition is not only about growing, but also about evolving.
