Naturgy Foundation and the CSIC open the deadline for the 3rd edition of the award for innovative research in the energy sector

The Naturgy Foundation and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) have opened the deadline for submitting works to the third edition of the Naturgy-CSIC Foundation Award for technological research in the energy field, which will recognize the best project in Spain with 100,000 euros developed by research groups, attached to public or private, non-profit organizations. Nominations may be submitted until February 16, 2025.

The objective of this third call is highlight innovation as one of the great accelerators of the energy transition and advance the decarbonization of the economy in Spain. The CSIC will coordinate the scientific commission evaluating the projects that are presented to receive the award. The winning project will be announced at a ceremony that will take place in Madrid, in June 2025.

The award is aimed at projects developed by public or private, non-profit research organizations, including public and private universities (registered in the Registry of Universities, Centers and Degrees) and other R&D&i centers. Likewise, they must be groups that carry out fundamental research or experimental development, and that have their own legal personality and tax residence in Spain.

Participating applications must be unpublished projects, research projects in progress or recently completed, and whose innovative potential is likely to be incorporated into the market or generate value in society. Candidate projects may address the following aspects: efficiency, security of supply, renewable sources and environment.

Awards from previous editions

The winner of the first edition of the award was a project by Institute of Bioeconomy of the University of Valladolid (IB-UVA), led by researcher Ángel Martín Martínezwhich proposed an innovative technology in the field of CO₂ capture and reduction processes.

Already in the second edition of the awards, the winning project was for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer Prototype with Improved Components (PRAGMATIC) of the Institute of Catalysis and Petroleochemistry of the CSIC, which proposed innovative technology through novel solutions for different aspects of the electrolyzer in the field of hydrogen generation, contributing to its commercial development.

The CSIC will coordinate the scientific commission evaluating the projects. The jury will evaluate and decide the winner. It is possible to consult all the information, as well as the different areas of the award on the Naturgy Foundation website.
