instagram will begin to limit the reach of profiles featuring people generated with artificial intelligence who try to present themselves as real users. The platform will stop recommending your posts to those who do not follow those accounts when that is the case.
The social network will also change the name of the voluntary label ‘AI creator’which will be renamed ‘AI-generated profile’. Its translation would be ‘AI generated profile’a much more precise description that avoids confusing these artificial characters with human creators dedicated to talking about artificial intelligence or using AI tools to create part of the content.
During testing of the previous label, Instagram found that many users felt deceived when they discovered that a seemingly human account was made by AI. The company assures that ‘People don’t like to see a profile that looks human’ and adds that ‘they want to know when a profile shows a person generated with AI’.
The platform will proactively seek accounts suspected of using artificial characters without correctly identifying them. When Instagram detects one of these profiles, their posts will no longer appear among recommendations aimed at people who do not yet follow the account. This will especially affect your presence in Reels and in the section Explore.
Those responsible for the marked accounts may add the new tag to regain access to recommendations. They will also have the possibility of appeal the decision from the account status tools when they consider that Instagram has made a mistake.
This measure does not require any user who uses these tools to identify themselves as a profile generated with AI. A photographer who uses artificial intelligence to retouch an image or a creator who uses it to generate part of a publication you won’t have to add the tag to your account.
The change is specifically targeted to virtual influencers, fictional characters and accounts that use synthetic faces to simulate that a real person exists behind it. What it does not intend to do is eliminate or filter all the low-quality content created with artificial intelligence that circulates on Instagram.
Until now, identifying these profiles depended mainly on their managers voluntarily activating the label. The loss of reach introduces for the first time a direct consequence for those who prefer to hide that the protagonist of their account has never existed.
