The weather will take a turn on Wednesday, September 16, with a day marked by instability in the Cantabrian Sea and in much of the eastern third of the Peninsula. The entry of cold air at height will coincide with the passage of a front on the surface and will favor a sharp change in temperatures in the north.
Precipitation will gain strength as the day progresses. Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Teruel, eastern Castilla-La Mancha, the Baetic systems and Mallorca concentrate the greatest probability of showers and storms, with important accumulations in several areas and risk of intense gusts, especially during the afternoon.
The contrast will be especially visible between the north and the south. While the maximums will drop noticeably in the northern half, the Alborán coastline could register slight rises. In the Canary Islands they will remain the high temperatures of the archipelagowith intervals of clouds on the north-facing slopes and clear skies in the southern areas.
Rains in the Mediterranean
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) predicts in the afternoon strong or very strong showers and storms in the east of the peninsula and Mallorca. The prediction contemplates that they may be accompanied by hail, occasionally large in Valencia and Teruel, as well as very strong gusts of wind.
In the Cantabrian Sea, the first half of the day will pass with cloudy or overcast skies and light rainfall. Afterwards, cloud cover will increase in the eastern interior, while the rest of the Peninsula will maintain slightly cloudy or clear skies, except some low morning clouds on the northern plateau and the Alborán coast.
The wind will be moderate from the north in the northern half and will leave very strong gusts of wind in the Ebro valley, as well as the Tramuntana in exposed areas of the Ampurdán. In the southern half it will blow lightly or moderately with a southern component, with a weak easterly wind in the Mediterranean, while the trade wind will be moderate in the Canary Islands and may intensify in exposed areas.
Descent of the maximums
Maximum temperatures will drop in almost the entire country, with notable and even extraordinary declines in the upper Ebro, northern Iberia and Castilla y León. The drop will exceed six degrees in large areas of the northern half and ten in some points of the interior.
Among the capitals, Córdoba and Granada will reach 36 degrees, while Badajoz, Jaén and Seville will reach 35. Albacete, Ciudad Real, Murcia and Toledo will be between 32 and 33 degrees. Madrid will have 27, Barcelona and Valencia 29, and Zaragoza 25. On the Mediterranean coast, Alicante and Tarragona will score 30, while Cádiz will remain at 25. At the opposite extreme, Burgos and Soria will have maximum of 19 degreesand Bilbao, Donostia-San Sebastián, Oviedo and Santander will remain between 21 and 22.
The minimum temperatures will also drop across the board, although they will tend to rise slightly in the southeast and the Balearic Islands. Santa Cruz de Tenerife will have a minimum of 26 degrees and 33 maximum, the highest nighttime figure in the table, while Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will range between 24 and 27 degrees. The haze will continue to be present in the archipelago.
