Moeve and DHL Express, the world’s leading provider of international express logistics, have signed an agreement this week for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Thus, from now until June 2027, DHL Express will acquire about 6,000 metric tons of SAF. This volume will cover approximately 50% of the fuel consumption of the international express logistics company in its operations center in Madrid, which represents an important step forward in reducing emissions derived from air transport operations in Spain.
The SAF supplied under the agreement is produced from raw materials from waste and waste, as defined in parts A and B of Annex IX of the EU Renewable Energy Directive, including materials such as used cooking oil. Compared to conventional aviation fuel, SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 80% over its life cycle and plays a key role in the decarbonization of aviation.
In the presentation of the agreement, Tomás Holgado, Vice President of Aviation at DHL Express Spain, stated that “the SAF is one of the most effective tools we currently have to reduce emissions from air freight transport. “This agreement with Moeve allows us to significantly increase its use in one of our main European hubs, our Madrid International Hub, and demonstrates how collaboration across the entire aviation value chain can accelerate the transition to lower-emission logistics.” For the manager, “having guaranteed a volume of SAF equivalent to approximately half of our fuel consumption in Madrid will allow us significant progress in our objective of increasing the use of SAF to 30% in 2030.”
For his part, Álvaro Macarro, Director of Aviation at Moeve, highlighted that “this agreement with DHL Express represents a new step in our strategy to accelerate the decarbonization of air transport through already available and scalable solutions such as sustainable aviation fuels.”
Macarro highlighted that “at Moeve we are making a determined commitment to become one of the great European references in the production of second generation biofuels, with a production capacity that already reaches 1.1 million tons per year and that will continue to grow significantly with the start-up, next year, of our new SAF plant in Huelva, which will provide an additional 500,000 tons.”
Both executives stressed the importance of this type of “alliances and collaborations, which demonstrate that the energy transition advances faster when producers and customers work together to reduce emissions from sectors that are difficult to electrify such as aviation.”
