DHL Express, the world’s leading provider of international express logistics, and Moeve have announced the signing of an agreement for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport (MAD). Under the agreement, DHL Express will purchase approximately 2 million US gallons (approximately 6,000 metric tons) of SAF over a one-year period from July 2026 to June 2027. This volume is expected to cover approximately 50% of DHL Express’ fuel consumption at its Madrid hub, representing an important step forward in reducing emissions from air transport operations in Spain.
The SAF supplied under the agreement is produced from raw materials from waste and waste, as defined in parts A and B of Annex IX of the EU Renewable Energy Directive, including materials such as used cooking oil. Compared to conventional aviation fuel, SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 80% over its life cycle and plays a key role in the decarbonization of aviation.
“Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most effective tools we currently have to reduce emissions from air freight transport. This agreement with Moeve allows us to significantly increase the use of SAF in one of our main European hubs, our Madrid International Hub, and demonstrates how collaboration along the entire aviation value chain can accelerate the transition to lower emissions logistics. By guaranteeing SAF volumes equivalent to approximately half of our fuel consumption in Madrid, we are making significant progress towards our goal of increasing the use of SAF up to 30% by 2030,” says Tomás Holgado, Vice President of Aviation at DHL Express Spain.

At Moeve we are making a determined commitment to become one of the great European references in the production of second generation biofuels, with a production capacity that already reaches 1.1 million tons per year and that will continue to grow significantly with the launch, next year, of our new SAF plant in Huelva, which will provide an additional 500,000 tons. Collaborations like this demonstrate that the energy transition advances faster when producers and customers work together to reduce emissions from sectors that are difficult to electrify such as aviation,” says Álvaro Macarro, Director of Aviation at Moeve.
Madrid is one of DHL Express’ main air operations centers in Europe, connecting urgent international and national shipments both inside and outside the continent. The agreement with Moeve strengthens DHL’s growing network of SAF collaborations and contributes to the company’s ongoing efforts to expand the availability and adoption of sustainable fuels in aviation.
This collaboration reflects DHL Express and Moeve’s shared commitment to supporting the decarbonization of air transportation through practical and scalable solutions available today. By using SAF derived from raw materials from waste and waste, the agreement supports both the principles of the circular economy and the reduction of aviation-related emissions.
To ensure that these environmental benefits are transparently passed on to customers, DHL incorporates SAF volumes into its GoGreen Plus1 service offering. GoGreen Plus enables customers to reduce transportation-related emissions through the use of sustainable fuels and a verified book-and-claim mechanism. Using this approach, DHL can replace fossil jet fuel with SAF within its network and assign the associated environmental attributes to customers, even when individual shipments are not transported on directly fueled aircraft.
SAF. GoGreen Plus helps customers reduce indirect Scope 3 emissions from transportation and distribution activities, while supporting voluntary greenhouse gas reporting and progress toward their own sustainability goals.
As part of its sustainability roadmap, DHL Group has committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and aims to increase the share of sustainable aviation fuels in air transport to more than 30% by 2030. The agreement with Moeve marks another important milestone in moving towards these goals and driving wider adoption of sustainable aviation fuels in the logistics and aviation sectors.
