He Bombardier Global 8000 has set a new speed record between Los Angeles and FarnboroughEditin it United Kingdom. The business plane completed the journey of about 8,700 kilometers in 8 hours and 46 minutes despite encountering winds that the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier describes how unfavorable.
During the flight he reached Mach 0.93equivalent to about 990km/h at its cruising altitude. The Global 8000 was traveling to Farnborough to participate in the International Air Show held in that British town. There he held his first aerial displays before the public.
Bombardier presents it as the fastest civil aircraft in the world since the concorde. Its maximum speed is Mach 0.95nearly 1,000 km/h under normal high-altitude flight conditions. ‘Speed is, without a doubt, the main hallmark of the Global 8000‘, and this latest achievement highlights what sets this aircraft apart, its ability to bring the world closer than ever,’ adds McCullough.
The plane offers a maximum range of 8,000 nautical miles, equivalent to 14,816 kilometersenough to cover many intercontinental routes non-stop. Its cabin has four different spaces and measures 16.6 meters long, 2.44 meters wide and 1.88 meters high. It can also operate at a maximum altitude of 15,545 meters and access, according to Bombardier, 30% more airports than its closest competitor thanks to its takeoff and landing performance.
The comparison with the Concorde requires clarification. The Global 8000 is the fastest civil aircraft since the supersonic aircraft was retired in 2003but it’s nowhere near his speed. The Concorde usually flew to Mach 2around 2,160 km/hmore than double that of Bombardier’s reactor.
Another of its characteristics is a cabin altitude of only 820 meters. This means that its pressurization system maintains a pressure inside the fuselage equivalent to that existing at that altitude above sea level, even when the aircraft flies at more than 12,000 meters. Higher internal pressure reduces fatigue and other effects associated with long flights.
Bombardier has also obtained a Environmental Product Declaration either EPD. This certification does not imply that the plane has no environmental impact, but rather that an analysis makes public indicators such as its CO₂ emissions, noise or water consumption throughout its life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to its manufacture, use and disposal. ‘For us, it’s about continuous improvement in all phases of aircraft development,’ adds McCullough.
