The Israeli Ministry of Defense stated this Saturday that Israel has launched a “preventive strike against Iran” to “eliminate threats” to its country, after which anti-missile alarms have sounded in Israeli territory. Witnesses and Iranian media claim to have heard at least three explosions in central and northern Tehran, one of them near the headquarters of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to American media, the attack occurred with the support of the United States, although it has not been specified what American participation was.
“An attack with missiles and drones against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future,” adds Defense in a statement, in which it reports that Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared a state of emergency throughout the country.
Iranian media reported this Saturday at least three explosions in the center and north of Tehran shortly after Israel announced that it had launched attacks against the Islamic Republic.
The New York Times also reported this, indicating that there is no clarity at the moment about what the objectives of the US and Israeli attacks in Iran have been.
The newspaper adds that the latest talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland over the Iranian nuclear program ended without results, which “apparently” paved the way for the attack.
