This was stated by the director of the Caribbean center of increased sea level, Fernando Pabón Ricoafter highlighting that the documentary explains how the melting of glaciers, caused by the global warmingnegatively affects coastal regions throughout the planet, and how Puerto Rico has the potential to become an adaptation model, as it has a high elevation in most of the territory.
“If we can adapt to the increase in sea level, we will be able to handle the challenges much better when a hurricane comes from flood areas, how we order our activities”said Pabón Rico, who is an architect and urban planner.
The Caribbean center is attached to Science, Technology and Research Trustwhose general manager, Gilberto Guevara Velázquezhe said that, “for us, as an island, the most difficult, within all the different challenges of climate change, is the effect of sea level increase.”
According to Guevara Velázquez, the key point of the discussion is to explore “how we can have an economy that is sustained and that will survive, and we do not have to try to respond to emergencies and disasters.”
On the change of the coasts, Pabón Rico considered that urban planning must be in mind the quality of the long -term beaches. “With the increase in sea level, we have to ask ourselves where the beaches of the future will be. It is essential to know where that shore will be located in 100 years ”he said.
Guevara Velázquez added that “we have to reach those who direct the country, the people who are at the political level.”
According to Pabón Rico, “the trust has the mission of helping Puerto Rico be trained, the necessary investigations are facilitated and invested in the critical sectors so that our society can cope with the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities represented by the 21st century.
