Until recently, when we imagined the future of robotics we thought of factories full of mechanical arms, robots exploring Mars or machines performing tasks dangerous to human beings. We envisioned a future in which AI solved diseases, created drugs and gave us answers to centuries-old enigmas. The great revolution seemed to consist of replacing our muscles or our brains. However, the next frontier could be much more unexpected: our bonds.
The Chinese company UBTECH has just presented the UWORLD U1, an android that it defines as the first mass-produced, life-size ultrabionic humanoid robot designed specifically to coexist with people. He doesn’t intend to cook better than us or build cars faster. Its main objective is much more ambitious: talk, remember, accompany and, to a certain extent, establish an emotional relationship with its owner.
The presentation marks a change of direction for the industry. Until now, the most advanced humanoids, such as Optimus from Tesla, Figure 02 or Walker S, also from UBTECH, were oriented towards physical work. The UWORLD U1, on the other hand, was created to occupy a completely different space: the living room. And the company already has more than 13,000 orders.
The new humanoid incorporates silicone skin, an expressive face, movements inspired by human biomechanics and up to 88 degrees of freedom, allowing it to perform gestures very similar to ours. Its neck reproduces the mobility of the cervical vertebrae and its artificial intelligence It has been trained to recognize emotional states and respond differently depending on the context of the conversation.
The system is based on the world’s first voice learning model (LLM) with emotion recognition capabilities: It is capable of identifying more than 20 emotional states with an accuracy of over 90%. Its biomimetic brain architecture, which combines fast and slow responses, is based on principles of cognitive neuroscience, enabling a 500-millisecond intuitive response system. A biomimetic expression activation system, controlled by a proprietary controller, reduces the synchronization latency between speech and lips to less than 20 milliseconds, creating an extraordinarily realistic interaction experience. UBTECH ensures that the system can maintain a long-term memory of conversations, learn user preferences and progressively adapt their behavior. The company also insists that much of the processing is done locally to reduce reliance on the cloud and protect privacy.
The choice of link over brain or muscle is not accidental. China faces one of the largest demographic aging processes in the world. Millions of older people live alone and it is increasingly difficult to meet their needs for care and support. UBTECH states that in China there are around 118 million elderly people whose children no longer live with them and around 90 million adults who live alone, a reality that the company identifies as one of the drivers of this new product. At a global level, the WHO speaks of a pandemic: one in six people suffers from loneliness and almost 900,000 people die every year from causes linked to social isolation. At the launch, the company also noted that it will donate 100 of these androids to support mental health programs.
In other words, the robot is not presented solely as a domestic assistant, but as a possible technological response to a social problem. From a scientific point of view, the idea is not as strange as it might seem. Psychology has been demonstrating for decades that human beings tend to attribute emotions, intentions and even personality to objects that show minimally social behavior. It happens with virtual pets, voice assistants, video game characters and even extremely simple robots.
This phenomenon is called anthropomorphization: our brain interprets certain gestures, expressions or ways of speaking as signs that there is “someone” on the other side, even though we know perfectly well that this is not the case. The more human a robot appears, the more easily we activate those same social mechanisms. However, there was an announcement during the presentation that generated intense debate. UBTECH explained that plans to offer versions capable of recreating the face and voice of specific people through three-dimensional facial reconstruction and voice cloning. The idea would be to reproduce the appearance of a loved one to become the basis of the companion robot.
The proposal has raised numerous ethical questions. Could it help combat loneliness? Or would it make it difficult to accept a person’s absence? Where does memory end and substitution begin? What is clear is that the UWORLD U1 is probably not the last of its kind. Its importance may not lie so much in its technology as in the cultural change it represents. For decades we have designed robots to work alongside us. Now they are beginning to be designed to coexist with us.
The great unknown is no longer whether machines will one day be able to walk, talk or recognize our emotions. Advances in artificial intelligence and robotics indicate that they will be closer to achieving this. The real question is another: Are we prepared to establish emotional bonds with them?
