Miami – The current summer of the northern hemisphere has some of the shortest days in history for the acceleration of the rotation of the world, according to data from the International Earth Rotation Service and Reference Systems (IES, in English) and the United States Naval Observatory.
On July 9 and on July 10, some of the shortest days since there is a record because an estimated 1.23 and 1.36 milliseconds less than the official duration of 24 hours, according to the Time and Date site, a reference of the subject, based on the statistics of the IErs and the US Naval Observatory.
These data are approaching the record of July 5, 2024, when the day lasted 1.66 milliseconds less.

In addition, scientists predict that on July 22 and August 5 they will also be among the shortest days in historybecause the first would last 1.38 milliseconds less and the second to 1.51 milliseconds less.
Specialists have noticed that the earth has accelerated its rotation speed since 2020so the five shortest days in history have been documented since then, but they consider it something temporary, because the long -term trend is that the world turns slower.
The Earth Orientation Department of the US Naval Observatory confirmed in a report that the “most recent information, obtained with greater precision and regularity, has shown that changes in acceleration have caused irregular variations in the duration of the day.”
The researcher Leonid Zotov of the State University of Moscow, one of the world’s main experts in the rotation of the Earth, presented Time and Date that “nobody expected this” and that there is still no explanation about the current acceleration of the globe.
“Most scientists believe that it is something inside the earth. Oceanic and atmospheric models do not explain this enormous acceleration”Zotov exposed to the middle.
Another specialized scientific medium, Live Science, explained that the speed of rotation depends on factors such as the position of the moon and the sun, as well as the gravitational field of the earth.
“With the moon closer to the poles, the earth begins to turn faster, making our usual more than usual,” he said this week.
