The commercial aviation is on the verge of a new transformation. After decades in which airlines have progressively expanded the reach of their routes, Airbus is now working on an aircraft designed to take ultra-long-haul flights to a new level. The European manufacturer is committed to direct connections between some of the most remote points on the planet, reducing the need for stopovers and shortening total travel times for millions of passengers.
The company has developed a ultra long range (URL) version of its A350 family with which it aims to revolutionize intercontinental air transport. The model, named A350-1000ULR, has been designed to remain in the air for up to 22 continuous hoursa figure that far exceeds the usual duration of most long-haul commercial flights.
Currently, non-stop routes are usually between 3 and 15 hours long. However, Airbus wants to go one step further and open the door to routes that until recently seemed difficult to operate efficiently and profitably.
A plane designed to connect the ends of the planet
The new A350-1000ULR represents a technological evolution within one of the most successful aircraft families of the European manufacturer. Its main objective is to cover extremely long routes without the need to refuel during the journey.
Flight tests have already begun and are part of a process aimed at verifying the behavior of the aircraft in demanding conditions. During these tests, the device reached an altitude of 12,500 meters (41,000 feet)allowing engineers to analyze its performance in prolonged operations and evaluate its ability to handle flights close to a full day in duration.
The initiative seeks to respond to a growing demand for direct connections between large economic and tourist centers. More and more travelers prefer to avoid stopovers, reducing waiting times and eliminating the inconvenience associated with changing planes at intermediate airports.
The challenge of traveling 18,000 kilometers without stopping
Although long-haul routes are part of the normal operations of many airlines, the challenge posed by Airbus goes much further. The manufacturer works with the goal of reaching routes of up to 18,000 kilometersan autonomy that would allow cities located at opposite ends of the world to be linked through a single flight.
Among the most representative examples are connections such as London-Sydney or New York-Singapore non-stop. This type of routes would mean a significant time saving for passengers and would change the way many international trips are planned.
The program is linked to the so-called Project Sunrisewhose entry into service is scheduled for April 2027. Within the sector, the closest reference continues to be flight Singapore–New York operated by Singapore Airlinescurrently considered one of the longest commercial journeys in the world, lasting close to 19 hours.
More fuel, more range and a new on-board experience
To achieve these benefits, Airbus has introduced specific improvements with respect to the conventional model. The A350-1000ULR will incorporate an additional fuel tank that will allow it to add 1,000 nautical miles (1,852 kilometers) of extra range compared to the standard A350-1000.
The interior configuration has also been designed with extremely long flights in mind. The device will have 238 seats distributed in four categories: 6 first class, 52 business class, 40 premium economy and 140 economy.
Beyond autonomy, one of the main challenges will be to guarantee the well-being of those who spend more than twenty hours inside the aircraft. This type of operations forces us to rethink aspects related to crew rest, passenger comfort and the organization of on-board services.
Therefore, Airbus works on specific solutions to improve the experience during longer journeys. Among them, the incorporation of a wellness area for travelers stands out, a space designed for walking, stretching and relaxing during the flight. The company believes that these types of elements will be key to making routes that could shape the future of long-distance commercial aviation more bearable.
