Today, October 12, 2025Barcelona will host the Spanish National Holiday of Columbus Day. The Civic Movement of Spain and Catalans and Catalonia Suma por España will organize this morning at 10:00 a.m. the demonstrationwhich will begin with the opening of an Entity Fair in the central mosaic of the Plaza de Catalunya.
This celebration has not always been received in the best possible way by various political organizations. For example, on October 12, 2022, The Ministry of Equality and Feminisms of the Generalitat made a publication on the social network X, formerly known as Twitterin which this administration offered its point of view on the meaning of this day.
“The colonization of America was one of the greatest genocides in history”
Crossing out the words “discovery” and exchanging them for “colonization”. Basically, the message was the following: “The colonization of America was one of the greatest genocides in history, with systematic violations of the human rights of millions of people. Today, 12-O we have nothing to celebrate”.
For its part, The ‘tweet’ was also accompanied by an image showing slavery of Latin Americans were once discovered by settlers. This was not the only text they sharedsince the publication was a thread made up of two writings, the first being the one already mentioned in previous paragraphs.
“Let’s build an anti-racist future that recognizes Catalonia’s colonial past
The feminist and equality collectiveThe Generalitat tried to foster an environment in which racial prejudices disappear and where discrimination is put aside and in which rights are not violated. “Let us build an anti-racist future that recognizes Catalonia’s colonial past and the history of discrimination and violations of rights based on skin color, phenotype or origin. Let us remember”they reported.
Carles Puigdemont: “Today they have nothing to celebrate and much to complain”
That same October 12, Carles Puigdemont pointed out that the Spanish monarchy has a debt with those indigenous peoples that he conquered and that “he has never paid”. Through social networks, and again through the X platform, the president of Junts offered the following words along with an image of a South American board where the pieces imitated the indigenous people:
“The original game ended in genocide. In this one, from a board that was given to me from South America, the native peoples defeat the conquerors. Today they have nothing to celebrate and much to complain about. The Spanish monarchy has an outstanding debt that it never pays“.
