He Ministry of Health approved this month its Comprehensive Tobacco Prevention and Control Plan (PIT) which, among other things, opens the door to increasing smoke-free spaces or increasing the price of tobacco packs through an increase in taxes. In most European countries, tobacco taxation is between 80 and 90%, while in our country, taxes are set at 51%, according to data from the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine semFY. Thus, the average cost of a pack in Spain is 4.60 euros, one of the lowest on the continentand. At the other extreme is Ireland, where the price of this product is almost 13 euros, 12.81 specifically. There is also a substantial difference with respect to other closer countries. In France, the average price of a pack of cigarettes is 10 euros, although the French country plans to raise the price to 12 euros in 2025.. In Germany, a pack can be purchased for about 7 euros.
Before the new legislation is approved, the Commissioner for the Tobacco Market, under the Treasuryhas published through the Official State Gazette (BOE) on April 27, 2024 the new price list of cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, rolling sticks and pipe sticks of different brands. The new prices of tobacco products affect the entire peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Among the brands that are undergoing changes this week are Benson & Hedges, Lucky Strike, Mayfair, Silk Cut, Sterling, Alejandro Alfambra and Cohiba, among others. In recent weeks, Malboro, Chesterfield, Ducados, L&M, Winston and Nobel have experienced price changes. Adjustments have also been made in other forms of tobacco such as vapes, which are increasingly consumed, especially among the younger public.
