The polar cold freezes these areas on the coldest day of winter

The episode of continental polar cold that affects a large part of Spain has recorded extremely low temperatures in the early hours of this Tuesday, on the coldest day so far this winter. This phenomenon is due to the arrival of a cold air mass from northern Europecharacterized by its continental origin and its dryness. Throughout the week, clear skies will allow the heat accumulated during the day to escape during the night, causing very low minimums.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has reported that the frost affected a total of 44 provinces, that is, all except Badajoz, Cádiz, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, Pontevedra and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In total, 488 AEMET stations recorded temperatures below zero, which represents 58.9% of its observatories.

The coldest areas were in Cuéllar (Segovia) and the port of Pico (Ávila), where -12.2 degrees were reached. Other affected towns were Martinet (Lleida), Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara), Cedrillas (Teruel) and Ucero (Soria), with temperatures close to -11 degrees.

The phenomenon also affected 28 provincial capitals, the coldest being Teruel (-9.6), Ávila and Soria (-6.7), Burgos (-6.5) and Salamanca (-5.9). On Monday, the frost also extended to 411 observatories, with Cap de Vaquéira (Lleida) as a reference point, reaching -11.0 degrees. Despite the intensity of the cold this Tuesday, it is not the lowest temperature recorded in 2025, since on January 7 it reached -13 degrees in Pradollano (Granada) and last Sunday -14 degrees were recorded in Cap de Vaquéira.
