The director of Robotics at OpenAI resigns after the agreement with the Pentagon

The director of OpenAI’s Robotics division, Caitlin Kalinowski, announced this Saturday her resignation from the artificial intelligence (AI) company, due to deep ethical concerns about the recent collaboration agreement signed between the technology company and the Pentagon.

Kalinowski justified his departure through a message on the social network X, where he warned that the deployment of AI in the US defense apparatus lacks the necessary safeguards.

“Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they received.”“said the engineer, emphasizing that her decision is based on a matter of “principles.”

The resignation comes after the signing last week of a contract by which OpenAI technology will be integrated into the United States defense system and war machinery.

This move by the US War Department occurred after a stalemate in negotiations with Anthropic, another popular AI firm formed by former OpenAI employees.

After breaking ties with Anthropic, the White House launched a military operation against Iran in collaboration with Israel, in which OpenAI tools would have been used.

This week, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei denounced OpenAI’s agreement with the Pentagon, calling the rival company’s justification “security theater” and its marketing strategy a “lie,” according to specialized media reports after accessing an internal circular.
