Renewable diesel can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% throughout its life cycle compared to conventional diesel. In addition, it is compatible in the engines of both current airplanes and other types of vehicles that provide services in land operations necessary for the operation of airports. For example, in the gardeners (buses), tractors, plane starters, air conditioners and plane platforms.
Therefore, this fuel is gaining ground in Spanish airports. Specifically, Moeve’s HVO100 renewable diesel will be the one used by South vehicles to meet their objective of decarbonizing their activity in the 38 national airports in which it operates.
The HVO100 produced by Moeve is the biofuel used by the South land assistance equipment (South Europe Ground Services), a subsidiary of the IAG group, since the end of 2024 and the alliance of both companies foresee the supply of more than 150,000 liters throughout 2025.
The product is acquired with a statement of sustainability that reflects South’s efforts to meet its goals in this area and reduce its environmental impact.
With this action, the E Handling company starts a new stage in its commitment to sustainability, -which, in turn, aligns with the 2030 Agenda and the Aena Climate Action Plan -, and in which it hopes to reduce its CO2 emissions that 90% that allows this renewable diesel. In addition,
In all airports
The first South land assistance teams that have operated with the HVO100, which Moeve produces in its Energy Park in La Rábida, Huelva, have been those of the airports of Malaga, Granada, Jerez de la Frontera and Almería. Soon its use will be extended to Barcelona, Badajoz and Córdoba.
In addition, South and Moeve are working so that the HVO100 renewable diesel, equivalent to land on land to which SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) is for airplanes, is also available in island airports, where this product is currently not yet sold.
In total, the expansion of the HVO among the more than 200 teams with which South operates in the different Spanish airports will mean the use of more than 150,000 liters of this fuel until the end of the year.
Decarbonize handling
The person in charge of South’s purchase and investment control, Cristina Grade, explained that “the company’s objective is to guarantee a sustainable future of handling. Therefore, we invest in processes and technologies that contribute to reducing our carbon footprint, such as the replacement of electronic thermal equipment or the incorporation of biofuels for those who do not have an electrical equivalent in the market ».
“Alliances such as the one we have created with South help us boost sustainable mobility in airports, providing terrestrial fleets an immediate alternative for a more sustainable aviation,” said José Emiliano Pardo, Director of Direct Sales of Moeve. He added: «In Moeve we make available to our clients solutions such as biofuels, fast and simple to implement, which enhance their decarbonization. Fact that, together with the fact that we already supply SAF in the main Spanish airports, is crucial to reduce the carbon footprint of the air sector ».
Supply guarantee
To guarantee the renewable diesel supply to its clients, the energy is developing with its partner a new plant that will produce flexibly 500,000 tons of HVO100 and SAF, and will be part of the largest complex for the production of second generation biofuels of the south is Europe. With this project, the company advances in its objective of leading the production of 2g biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual capacity planned for 2030 of 2.5 million tons.
