The AEMET warns of a new DANA that will leave widespread rains, snowfall and warnings in several communities

The week begins with a new episode of meteorological instability in Spain due to the arrival of a DANAwhich will once again alter the atmosphere and leave rainfall in much of the countrys. According to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET)the rains will be quite widespread in the Peninsula, the snow will settle at lower levels and a thermal drop will be noticed.

Rains advancing from the northwest

During this Monday, instability will continue on the peninsula and in the Balearic Islands under the influence of a Atlantic trough and the passage of a front which, in the most likely scenario, will be isolated forming a new DANA in the western peninsula leaving cloudy or overcast skies.

The AEMET warns of locally heavy rainfall in the north of the Balearic Islands and northeast Catalonia which could be accompanied by storms and occasional hail.

The rains will progressively affect Castilla y León, Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Andalusia and the interior of the southeast.

Decrease in temperatures and lower snow level

The situation will be accompanied by a drop in temperaturesespecially pronounced in the western half of the Peninsula. In the interior of Galicia and the west of the Cantabrian Mountains, a notable drop in maximum temperatures is even expected.

The snow level will also decrease significantlywith significant accumulations in mountainous areas of the Cantabrian Mountains, the surroundings of Sanabria and the Central System.

Alerts for snowfall and rain in these communities

Six communities are today on yellow alert, three of them due to snowfall, with significant accumulations in mountain areas of the Cantabrian mountain range and the Central system, to which are added the Balearic Islands due to intense rains, and Galicia and the Canary Islands due to coastal phenomena. The three communities on yellow alert for snowfall are Madrid, Asturias and Castilla y León.

It will snow in the mountains of the northern half at an elevation of 1,300/1,500 meters, dropping in the western part to 800/1,200 meters. In the mountains of Madrid, more than 5 centimeters of snow will accumulate from 1,100-1,200 meters.

On the other hand, in the north of Balearicsunder rainfall warning, may be locally strong, accompanied by storms and occasional hail. On the Galician coast, in areas of A Coruña and Pontevedraon alert for coastal phenomena, waves may reach between 4 and 5 meters.

DANA will move south and east

According to Meteored, tomorrow, Tuesday, the center of the depression at altitude will be between Andalusia and the Alboran Sea. Precipitation will tend to decrease in the Central System and in the Gulf of Cádiz, but They will intensify in the east of Andalusia, the area around the Strait, Ceuta, Melilla, the Region of Murcia, the east of Castilla-La Mancha and the Valencian Community.

In these areas there may be rain locally intense and stormys, advancing from southwest to northeast. In some Andalusian regions, rainfall could be more irregular as it is located below the core of the depression.

Snowfall will retreat from the center and northbut they will gain prominence in the mountains of the southeast of the peninsula. Orange level warnings have been activated in the area around Guadix-Baza and the Genil basin due to accumulations of more than five centimeters of snow. The level will drop below 1,000 meters and there could be landslides that will allow us to see snow at a lower altitude.

Intense rains and evolution of DANA

The AEMET has also activated yellow warnings for rain that could exceed the 20 liters per square meter in one hour in the Pitiusas and in several areas of the Valencia Communityna, although the final distribution of precipitation presents some uncertainty due to the erratic nature of these depressions, Meteored warns. Some meteorological models do not rule out that for a few hours the DANA will evolve into a cold low over the Alboran Sea.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, The rains will continue in the Valencian Community, the east-southeast of Castilla-La Mancha, Melilla and the eastern Andalusian provincess, although with a tendency to weaken as the depression loses intensity. Temperatures will begin to recover. However, weather maps suggest that this may not be the last DANA to affect Spain during the month of March.
