The AEMET announces a train of fronts with heavy rains and snow

The week has started with a winter atmosphere in much of the country, with maximum temperatures that will not exceed 10 degrees in the interior of the peninsula, widespread frosts and sea storms in Galicia, according to the prediction of the spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Rubén del Campo. The next few days will be marked by the alternation between stable days and others with the passing of fronts that will leave rain in large areas of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Temperatures will be typical of this time of year or somewhat lower than usual, although they will tend to rise as the week progresses.

Late this Monday, A front will reach Galicia with abundant rains in the west, which will extend more weakly towards the northwest of Castilla y León and west of Asturias. On Tuesday, the front will cross the peninsula from west to east, leaving rainfall in several regions, less likely on the Mediterranean slope and the Balearic Islands. In the west of Galicia the rains will be especially heavy and may be accompanied by a storm, strong wind and a significant sea storm, with waves that will exceed five or six meters.

The snow level will appear from about 1,000 to 1,200 meters (m) in the north, which could affect some roads. Even so, night temperatures will rise, reducing the extent and intensity of the frosts of previous days, while maximum temperatures will fall, especially in the east of the peninsula. On the northern and southern plateau, temperatures will not exceed 10ºC, while on the Mediterranean coast, especially in the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, the Region of Murcia and Andalusia, temperatures will be around 18 to 20ºC.

He Wednesday will start with rains in the center and south of the Peninsula that will move towards the east, where they will even reach the Balearic Islands. In Melilla they could be locally strong. Del Campo has specified that The snow level in the north will be between 800 and 1,000 m. In the afternoon, a new front will once again leave persistent rain in western Galicia. Temperatures will continue to drop and there will be frosts in the north, center and east, more intense in the Pyrenees. Thursday will dawn again with frost, while The front will continue to advance with precipitation in large areasless likely in the Mediterranean and Balearic Islands.

A warmer and milder December long weekend

Looking ahead to the December long weekend, the AEMET spokesperson has pointed out that uncertainty increases significantly. Fronts with more probable rains could continue to arrive in the north and west of the country, although without ruling out that they reach other areas.

Temperatures will rise and so will the snow level, which will be restricted to high mountain areas. In coastal areas the environment will be temperate, with 18-20ºC in the Cantabrian Sea and 20-22ºC in the Mediterranean.

A warmer and possibly drier winter

Looking ahead to the coming months, the AEMET predicts that the meteorological winter, from December 1 to February 28, will probably be warmer than normal throughout Spain, with a probability between 60% and 70%compared to 10% being colder. Likewise, there is a 40% chance that it will be drier than usual in the southwest of the peninsula, although the behavior of precipitation in the rest of the country is not yet clear.

If this forecast is confirmed, it would be the eighth consecutive winter with a warm or very warm nature. The last winter that was colder than normal in Spain was 2017-2018, according to Del Campo.
