The 3 easiest steps to free up Gmail storage space in minutes

If you have ever received the dreaded message “Storage is full” in your Gmail account, now you will know that there is a solution. Over time, our emails accumulate quickly taking up space. However, there are quick and easy ways to free up space on your Gmail account in just a few minutes.

Here we offer you a simple guide with some effective tricks to help you clean up your inbox and recover much-needed space.

Delete old messages

One of the easiest ways to free up space is by deleting old emails that you no longer need.. Emails you’ve accumulated over time are usually less important than new ones, so you can start with them.

  • Step 1: In the Gmail search bar, click on the filters icon (the slider icon) on the far right. This will open a menu with different options to search for specific emails. However, there’s an even easier trick: Instead of typing something in the search box, simply click the blue button in the bottom right corner of the filter menu. This will make Gmail show all the emails in your account.
  • Step 2: You will see a count of emails in the upper right corner above the message list. Click “Last Page” to have Gmail show you emails from oldest to most recent. Now you can start reviewing emails and deleting those you no longer need.

Review emails such as old notifications or advertising messages that are no longer useful. Deleting these emails will not only free up space, but will also help keep your inbox tidier.

Cancel subscriptions and delete promotional emails

Promotional emails and other subscriptions are known for quickly filling the inbox. Furthermore, most of these messages do not have relevant content and take up a lot of space.

  • Step 1: A quick way to identify these emails is by using the search bar. Just type “Unsubscribe” in the search box. This will display all messages that include the unsubscribe option, which usually appears at the end.
  • Step 2: You can take advantage of this search to do massive cleaning. Review the messages that contain that keyword and if you are no longer interested, unsubscribe.

Delete emails with large attachments

Emails that contain large attachments (such as photos, videos, or documents) can take up a lot of space in your account. To identify and delete these messages, you can use a very useful trick.

  • Step 1: Again, go to the search bar and click on the filters icon at the right end of the bar. In the filter menu, select the “Has attachment” box and then enter the number 5 in the “Size” field to search for emails with attachments larger than 5 MB.
  • Step 2: Gmail will show you all emails that contain large attachments. Review these messages and delete those you no longer need. You may have old photos, documents that are no longer relevant, or files that can be saved elsewhere.
  • Step 3: If you still need more space, you can repeat this process, but this time use lower numbers.

Don’t forget to empty the trash

When you delete emails, they don’t disappear immediately. Instead, they are saved in the “Trash” for 30 days. To make sure those emails are permanently deleted and free up space immediately, go to the “Trash” and select the deleted emails. Then, click “Permanently Delete” to immediately free up space.
