The ‘quartback’ of the Kansas City Chiefs has the opportunity to conquer its third Lombardi trophy consecutively in the Super Bowl Lix, which would mean the room in his career.

A destination that could have been different

However, the path of Mohamses in sport could have taken a completely different direction. His story could have been developed in baseball diamonds instead of the pits, following in the footsteps of his father, who was a professional player in the majors.

Baseball promise to NFL star

During his stage in high school in Whitehouse, Mohamses stood out in three disciplines: basketball, baseball and American football. Despite his talent in all of them, he seemed to make a career in baseball, influenced by the trajectory of his father, Patrick Mahomes Mr., who was reliever in the Minnesota Twins.

Thanks to this connection, the young Mohomes had the opportunity to live with MLB stars from a very young age. “He was always in the locker room, he was part of the team and stood out in baseball. I always thought he would dedicate himself to this sport,” his father confessed in an interview with Los Angeles Times in 2023.

His talent was undeniable and, in 2014, was selected by the Detroit tigers in the 37th Ronda of the MLB Draft. However, Mohamses had already made a crucial decision: committed to the University of Texas Tech, rejected the offer to focus on his university career.

The choice that changed the story

During his first year in Texas Tech, Mohams tried to combine baseball with American football, but in his second season he decided to focus exclusively on the latter, although he admitted that he always felt a heart baseball player.

He even received advice from iconic baseball figures, such as Alex Rodríguez, who tried to convince him that his future was in the MLB. “I said: ‘Listen to me, there is no money, there is no future, there is no story in American football. You have to play baseball.’ Well, he reminded me of that recently and, how good he ignored me!” Rodríguez between laughs.

It is impossible to know how far Mahomes would have arrived in baseball, but what is clear is that his decision was correct. His legacy in the NFL continues to grow and time has shown that he opted for the right path.
