Shocking natural spectacle: solar halo adorns the sky of Puerto Rico

An impressive optical effect in the atmosphere was observed this Friday in different towns in Puerto Rico when the ideal conditions occurred that allowed a luminous circle to be seen surrounding the Sunsimilar to a rainbow, which caught the attention of many. The phenomenon is known as a solar halo.

Immediately, residents of Guayama, Red Cape, Barcelona, Ponce, Corneramong others, took to their social networks to share videos and photographs of the phenomenon that was also captured in other countries.

The meteorologist Ernesto Moralesnotice coordinator National Weather Service (SNM), was one of the people who managed to capture the moment from Barceloneta and shared the image with The New Day.

According to National Geographic, the solar halo can be seen when sunlight is refracted by passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds.

Likewise, the magazine explained that “many times these crystals form more than six miles from the Earth’s surface.” “All the patterns are generated as sunlight (or moonlight) is reflected and refracted by flat, six-sided water ice crystals in Earth’s atmosphere,” he adds.
