Search Higher School Students for New Steam Program in Puerto Rico and Cambridge

The Innovbasam PR (ISPR) organization began on Tuesday the application process for its summer program this year, which will consist of two weeks of instruction, practical experiences and mentoring in sciences and related areas between Puerto Rico and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in Cambridge.

“We want to help how many young people can we discover the immense possibilities within them and their surroundings, so that they can transform their dreams into realizable goals. We want to equip them with knowledge, resources, mentoring, in short, with the certainty that they can succeed in the fields of Steam, ”said the doctor Edmarie Guzmán Vélezco -founder of the non -profit entity, in a statement.

The program will be carried out in person from July 7 to 18 between Puerto Rico and Cambridge. Ninth to eleventh grades students can already enter the portal www.innovasteampr.com and request.

The deadline to send the required documents is on Wednesday, March 12, before midnight.

We have 20 available spaces and we are superdeseous of knowing and supporting their dreams, because we know it will be an experience of great growth for the student body. Ask their parents, counselors, teachers to complete the form”, For his part, the doctor said Hector of Jesus Cortés.

Founded by Boricuas scientists Guzmán Vélez and Jesús Cortés, Innovbasam PR tries to stimulate students with interests in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (Steam, in English) to explore these fields, in particular the Neuroscience. The purpose is that they are interested in discovering all the possibilities that combine these issues, and continue studies in those who are passionate about them without economic factors.

When Dr. Guzmán Vélez and I were students a few years ago, we lived similar experiences that changed our lives. However, we realized how scarce those opportunities were and decided to do something about it”, Recalls the scientist.

In his time as students, Guzmán Vélez and Jesús Cortés were part of scientific training programs in the Río Piedras Campus of the Puerto Rico University (UPR) funded by National Health Institutes (NIH, in English), to which they attribute much of the success of their careers.

Eventually, as postdoctoral fellows in the Harvard Medical School and MIT, noticed that many students faced significant barriers to access high quality research and education experiences. Therefore, empowering students motivated and passionate about Steam became their mission as adults and doctors.

The neuroscientists explained that the participants of the Innovbasam Precollege Summer Program They will be exposed to scientific research and professional development workshops, supported by mentors. They can interact with scientists from different specialties and backgrounds of the UPR, Harvard, MIT and others. In addition, they will visit different research laboratories, and participate in multiple educational and cultural activities.

To be considered, they must take the ninth, tenth or eleventh grades, have an academic average (GPA) of 3.00 or more and complete the form available on the website.

In addition, it is a requirement to submit a credit transcription (of intermediate school for ninth students), two English essays of 250 words each, two letters of recommendation of an educator, mentor or advisor who knows of their concerns for a Steam field and his academic performance, and be able to travel to the United States in July. In Cambridge, they will stay with their fellow students and will be in the care of adults (chaperones).

It is urged to request without thinking about economic limitations, as the organization will try to support them with costs, including accommodation.

If the transcription is not able to provide before the deadline, students would have to request an official document from their school or school indicating that they will send it to info@innovasteampr.com as soon as possible. This letter must be added (“Uploaded”) to the application instead of credit transcription.

In relation to the essays, they must explain why you are interested in studying neurosciences, your reason to participate in the program, narrate some challenge they have faced and the steps taken to handle or solve the situation. In addition, they may list achievements, awards, awards, leadership positions assumed or extracurricular activities in which they have participated.
