Since its launch, just over a month ago, the new Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition has become an object of desire for some, depleting their stocks. But also in a nightmare due to some problems with your screen. What is the reality? Let’s get to it.
The Kindle Colorsoft is not only the first device from Amazon that has color ink, it has also expanded its screen to 7 inches (which slightly increases its weight), without betting on color outside the frames, which maintain the black matte plastic. it would have been It is interesting that the chromatic versatility of versions such as the Kindle or the Kindle Paperwhite was maintained… although this is a matter of taste and does not affect performance at all.
It is still manageable and light, although it is no longer so easy to carry it in a pocket. In the positive aspect that it has An IPX8 rating makes it easy to take it outdoors without fearing contact with water.
What is of youemer is its design in a specific section: the physical buttons. In particular, the on/off switch is located at the bottom and, because it protrudes slightly from the frame, if we press it a little too hard, it turns off involuntarily. The logical thing would have been to place it on the sides, to avoid this problem.
And now we go to the jewel in the crown of this new Kindle: color. To achieve this, Amazon has reduced the pixel density, which goes from 300 in black and white to 150 dpi (dots per inch) in color. And obviously this is noticeable.
Yes, we must highlight the benefits of brightness, perhaps too much in certain scenarios (such as reading in bed), so you have to trust it (very appropriate) automatic brightness mode that detects the environment and adapts the brightness.
In the memory section we have for a while: 32 GB, enough for more than 10,000 books, maybe a little less if they are in color, such as comics. Unless they have certain features such as those that make use of other formats, such as Adobe DRM, which is not compatible with Amazon readers.
As for the battery, we don’t have to worry, We can easily spend a month (more than enough) without needing to charge it. The fact that its charger has a USB-C port and can be charged with any cable is a relief: charging it so little makes it easy for us to forget where we left the charger. Ah! It also allows wireless charging, very useful in case of emergency.
Screen… It is tactile and very responsive, perhaps too much so when it comes to common controls such as changing pages or zooming. In color works, it takes too much time and the zoom takes longer to manage: reading comics may not be so fluent, it’s nice, but not fluent. Especially reading.
A detail that fans of “living” the books greatly appreciate is the underlining section: we can highlight texts in up to four different colors (yellow, pink, blue or orange). Yes, it is true that with low brightness you see grayish tones, but it is one of the best features.
Verdict:
For its price (€299) it is a very good option if we like color books or if we are fans of underlining texts and this is essential for us. Otherwise and unless we have a library of more than 5,000 books in electronic format, for half the price we have the also new Kindle Paper White.
