Saturday’s gadget: Huawei Mate X6, the foldable with the best camera

One of the most important premises in marketing strategies is the use of competition. For example, it has been shown that placing one fast food restaurant in front of another stimulates sales of both. Something similar happens in the technology sector: Innovation is nourished by the advances of competition. And vice versa: when a rival is lost, progress suffers. And that is precisely what has happened with Huawei since Google’s veto. The problem is that, in this case, we are the users who have lost.

Huawei was one of the first brands to present a folding device five years ago, a few months after Xiaomi and on par with Samsung. This indicates experience, both in folding flip and flop models. The new Huawei Mate X6 model is an example of this.

From the premium design, to the durability of the hinge and the quality of the screen (OLED that goes from 6.45 inches to 7.93), everything points to a well-kept smartphone. One of the most interesting aspects of this foldable is that, in its “closed” position, it is 9.8 mm, just two millimeters more than an iPhone 15. In this way, the Mate : its folded thickness or, translated, the place it occupies, since it almost looks like a “normal” mobile phone. If we add to that that it weighs almost the same as a Samsung S24 Ultra (239 grams versus 232 for the Korean one)the design work becomes even more evident.

Regarding battery, It has about 5510 mAh, which makes its weight and a fast charge of 66 W stand out more.very good, although not excellent. Added to that is 50W wireless charging and 7.5W reverse wireless charging.

The screens also have notable work behind them. On the positive side, resolution, quality, brightness, dozens of gestures enabled to create shortcuts and the absence of a relief in the fold area, both visually and tactilely. In the negative section, the only thing to point out is that When opening it to watch videos, the panoramic mode is not very well achieved and darker areas appear. It is a defect typical of the size and configuration of the folding ones, which does not exempt it, although it does justify it.

Multitasking mode is quick and easy in transitions. This is partly due to one of the busiest microchips Huawei (the Kirin 9020), to its RAM memory (12 GB, which is not intimidated by complex tasks) and 512 GB storage.

The Mate X6 arrives with EMUI 15, based on Android 12. Does the absence of Google bother you? At all. It is time to be frank in this section. Between the Huawei app store and Aurora Store, we have access to all applications without problem, with perfect compatibility and without delays. Not using a Huawei for Google is no longer an excuse. But… the absence of 5G could be a reason. And this is perhaps the only ballast (for now) that the Mate X6 has. And its price: it is close to 2000 euros.

The great asset of this high-end folding is its photography. For at least a decade now, Huawei and its mobile phones have stood out for being, at least, on the podium of mobile photography. But the same does not happen with folding ones, which in general have not stood out in this aspect. To put this aside, the MateX6 is inspired by its first “unilateral”, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra, dressing it with a triple camera of 50 MP, 40 MP (wide angle) and a 48 MP tele. To them is added a very decent 8 MP front lens. A mobile phone with this configuration (battery, microchip, screen, charging and photography) would already be a high-end one, but if we add to that the folding experience, it opens a door that, if it were not for 5G and secondly Google, It would stimulate competition much more.

Verdict:

If budget is not an obstacle, the screen and photography experience take the MateX6 to a higher level.
