The non-profit entity San Juan Bay Estuary recently invited taxpayers to support their work restoring bodies of water with the total or partial donation of their refund when filing spreadsheets.
Donating part of the refund is possible thanks to the Law 48 of 2009, which incorporated a special box in the forms, the “Contribution to the Special Fund for the San Juan Bay Estuary.” This is located on line 1 B of the 2017 Single Form.
“We have been able to detect sanitary discharges to bodies of water, as well as correct them together with the support of responsible government entities, including the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) and the municipalities of the metropolitan region of San Juan,” he expressed Brenda Torres Barretoexecutive director of the Estuary, in written statements.
“With the reinstatement of the citizen, we can move decisively and without respite. These funds allow us to access sources of funds that are only accessible by reimbursement. Therefore, Estuary has to spend its funds to access the sources of funds now accessible after hurricanes, earthquakes, COVID-19 and tropical cyclones such as Fiona“, he added.
The organization will use the money raised to work on fundamental areas, such as water quality monitoring, illegal discharge program, green infrastructure, education, among others.
