Samsung presents its Galaxy Ring in Spain… while working on the next generation

The first news we had was at the Mobile World Congress, months later we already had many of its specifications, but it had not yet arrived in Spain. That has changed: from today it is possible acquire the brand new Galaxy Ring from Samsung directly on your website.

The objective of this device is, initially, to replace the smart watch in everything related to health measurements: temperature, hours of sleep, blood oxygen, heart rate, with the comfort that its 3 grams do not bother the user at all. bedtime with it, something that can happen with the clock. The ring is available in three colors (black, gold and silver) and 9 possible sizes for 449 euros. It has a water resistance of up to 100 meters and a grade 5 titanium finish (the most used for its biological compatibility and its resistance to corrosion and high temperatures).

His battery has an autonomy of up to 7 days and its charging case has an LED light to indicate charging status. The Samsung Health application is the “screen” of this device: through it we see the variables, data and figures linked to health: from physical activity, heart rate, to sleep.

And then comes the key question: is a Galaxy Ring worth buying? What’s special about it? A few weeks before the presentation of Samsung’s smart ring, a patent was approved, both in the United States and Europewhich describes a “ring-like wearable device.”

The ring described has a system to obtain PPG signals (they transmit infrared waveforms to the skin and detect the signals reflected by the skin) useful for assess heart rate, breathing, and blood floweither.

According to the patent, the ring includes a sensor module that may include, for example, a gesture sensor, a gyroscopic sensor, an atmospheric pressure sensor, a magnetic sensor, an acceleration sensor, a grip sensor, a proximity sensor, a color sensor, an infrared (IR) sensor, a biometric sensor, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor or an illuminance sensor (the level of illumination).

With this data, we can deduce that the watch could (like smart watches) detect a fall of the wearer. The gesture sensor could be used to control other devices, for example a TV or the images from a projector, it would allow payment, open doors or locks (thanks to the magnetic sensor), send personal files or serve in the future as an identifier thanks to the biometric sensor, activate a home automation house (the humidity sensor could automatically activate irrigation).

In short, a ring with these characteristics would exceed the qualities of a watch and without a doubt that is why Samsung is betting.
