October 12 Hospital participates in a new national renal transplant chain with altruistic donor

He October 12 University Hospital He has successfully participated in a new national renal transplant chain of living donor, Coordinated by the National Transplant Organization (ONT) and driven by an altruistic donation from another autonomous community. This initiative has allowed several simultaneous transplants in different hospitals in the country, expanding the possibilities for patients with chronic renal disease on the waiting list.

On this occasion, the October 12 hospital has received A kidney from another hospital, which has been transplanted to a patient from which the original donor had no previous link or knowledge. In turn, the Madrid receptor had an incompatible living donor, who has donated his organ to a patient from another hospital with whom he was compatible. This intervention has been carried out by 3D laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique that improves the recovery of the donor.

The process starts from the solidarity decision of an altruistic donor: a healthy and anonymous person who decides to offer one of his kidneys to those who need it, without expecting anything in return. From this generous gesture, a chain of crossed donations is established between couples formed by a donor and an incompatible receiver, but compatible with members of other couples. Thus, the number of possible transplants is multiplied, maximizing the impact of a single initial donation.

The 12 de Octubre Hospital is part of this national program since 2010 and, since 2012, has intervened in eight cross transplant chains. On two of those occasions, the chain began with an altruistic donor of this Madrid center. In the remaining six, as in the latter case, the origin of the donation was located in other hospitals in the country.
