When a celestial object passes in front of another, it blocks part of its light or casts a shadow over space. Astronomers call these phenomena eclipses, occultations or transits, and they have been using them as research tools for decades. Thanks to them they have been able accurately measure the size of asteroids, detect atmospheres around distant worlds, and study regions of the universe that would otherwise remain hidden.
Many exoplanets were discovered because passing in front of their stars caused a minuscule decrease in brightness detectable from Earth.
