The President of the Government clings to the resignation of his partners to exercise their functions of controlling power to proclaim that he will exhaust the legislature. The Federal Congress closed it by proclaiming itself a candidate for the next general elections, which it says it will not advance. And it is true that today it is unlikely that his allies in Parliament will let him fall in the face of the perks achieved and promised. The Catalan quota for ERC, the amnesty for Junts, or the transfer of powers for the PNV, among others, for now.
Although corruption does bother these parties, they will not press the red button nor does Pedro Sánchez himself plan to do so at this time, because the numbers do not work out. But there are already 68.3 percent of citizens who believe that general elections should be called in the face of all the cases of corruption that plague the Government. This is reflected in the NC Report survey for LA RAZÓN, which testifies to citizens’ fatigue with cases of alleged corruption that affect socialist acronyms and that are being prosecuted. Only 24.9% deny that this situation should force Sánchez to call elections.
The electorate of PP and Vox ask for it in unison, logically. But already one in every 4 socialist voters joins the disaffection that marks the right-wing bloc and calls for elections to get out of this framework.
The survey also indicates that there are 65.7% of Spaniards who do believe that Moncloa is surrounded by corruption. And among them, 20.6% of socialist voters agree with this statement.
The direct accusation to Sánchez is already forceful, in the same way. 67.9 percent demand more explanations for the cases that come their way. And so far, he has only limited himself to describing Víctor De Aldama’s accusations as “invented”, to attribute everything to a setup by the right and the judges. No explanation either regarding the case that affects the president’s wife, who is accused of the crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business, along with two other crimes. Nor about the case of Sánchez’s brother, accused of crimes of influence peddling, embezzlement and prevarication. Added to this is the accusation by the State Attorney General for his leaks in the case of the partner of the president of the Community of Madrid.
In this context, it is important to note that 36% of left-wing voters are already clamoring for the president to be accountable to the citizens. In general, it is those over 55 years of age who in a greater percentage demand answers to the questions that Moncloa leaves unanswered.
Likewise, there are 62.9% of citizens who acknowledge feeling that Sánchez “has lied” regarding his relationship with Aldama. The President of the Government went so far as to say that he had never “crossed a word, neither in a meeting nor in a conversation, with Aldama”, despite the fact that the first photo together at an electoral rally in Madrid came to light. According to the businessman, both have met on more occasions, such as on Ábalos’ 60th birthday. The commissioner was even following an election night from the Ferraz headquarters, despite the fact that the PSOE has denied it. Only 27% trust the word of the President of the Government.
Regarding the aforementioned controversy that affects Begoña Gómez, who will testify on December 18 before Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, it is worth highlighting that 43.4 percent of those interviewed believe that the “Begoña case” can “bring down the Government”, while 46.1% deny it.
Half of Spaniards (52.6) now demand that the role of the consort of the President of the Government be regulated, after learning that an advisor from Moncloa had participated in efforts related to the chair co-directed by Begoña Gómez at the Complutense University from Madrid. 36.4% do not see it necessary.
The Government spokesperson, Pilar Alegría, defended this figure this week and assured that all the spouses of the Presidents of the Government have had an assistant for “organizational and logistical” tasks. The idea of regulating the figure of the president’s consort has been categorically rejected by the Government, while the PP has already registered an initiative in Congress to achieve it. The vote of the allies remains to be seen, although ERC was, at first, in favor.
Another case that sows suspicion on the Executive, by supporting it, is the one that affects the State Attorney General, Álvaro Ortiz, accused of an alleged crime of revealing secrets in the tax fraud case against the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso. More now, after Moncloa urged the former general secretary of the PSM Juan Lobato to use emails between the Prosecutor’s Office and Ayuso’s boyfriend in parliament. 56.9% believe that the prosecutor should have resigned now. The Government is the one who supports him, despite being accused and being the first attorney general charged and in the exercise of his position.
Given this panorama, the focus is also on whether the partners are willing to endure or not, if they are going to support an Executive surrounded by corruption. The progress of the “Ábalos case” in the courts may be a turning point. The majority, however, believes that the allies will continue to support the Government. 60.6% consider this, compared to 25.8% who understand that there is no reason for the allies to withdraw support for the Government. The popular ones, in fact, already blame the partners for continuing to “protect” Sánchez.
The idea that the PP promotes a motion of censure against Sánchez, as offered by Alberto Núñez Feijóo to his allies, is approved by 64.7% of citizens, while 30.9% disapprove. Those who most support this solution are the voters on the right.
Finally, Sánchez, according to this survey, is suspended as leader of the PSOE. His leadership is rated a four. It does not approve in any age range. His people give it a 5.9, while Sumar gives it a 5.6. The PP scores it with a one and Vox with half a point. The downward trend in the polls, in seats and in popularity, reinforces the partners to collect their demands in the negotiation of the PGE.
