Marlaska remains silent: What will happen now with the more than 200 Navarra Traffic Civil Guards?

With nighttime and treachery, in the middle of the December long weekend, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, put his signature at the service of EH Bildu and ratified, through the Official State Gazette (BOE), the expulsion of the Navarra Traffic Civil Guards. Thus he gave in, although with some delay, to the “blackmail” of the nationalists to support the socialist government of María Chivite. It must be remembered that the Navarrese Executive had to modify its original text after this same year The Supreme Court will partially annul this transfer of powers.

But once this procedure was completed, the way was now clear to give the formation of Arnaldo Otegi what he demanded. The text published in the BOE on December 6 states that “they correspond to Navarra regarding traffic, motor vehicle circulation and road safety“O which is the same, The Provincial Police of Navarra will now have exclusive jurisdiction over the roads of the region.

A situation that causes not only discomfort but uncertainty among the more than 200 agents of the Civil Traffic Guard who provide service in this autonomous community. Because the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, as always, remains silent in response and because no information comes from the Armed Institute either. For this reason, the JUCIL association has formally demanded through a letter sent to the General Directorate of the Benemérita that Marlaska himself be the one to give explanations to the agents at the next Plenary Session of the Civil Guard Council.

Marlaska, the top person in charge

And there are many unanswered questions. The head of the Interior must clarify “what will be the planned calendar for the transfer of powers, How it will affect workforces, destinations and possible job cuts“demands Ernesto Vilariño, general secretary of this association. Furthermore, he insists that it must be Grande-Marlaska who justifies and explains this decision: “We ask that you not delegate your intervention and that you directly assume the task of solving the complicated work and family situation of the more than 200 Traffic agents in Navarra”.

Because all eyes are on the Minister of the Interior. There is no point in delegating this responsibility to the general director of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González. The maximum person in charge, in the opinion of this association, is Fernando Grande-Marlaska, since this decision is not new, it comes from months ago. “We warned it then and we continue to defend it now: any modification that implies the transfer of powers must guarantee transparency, respect for the labor rights of agents and an adequate regulatory framework,” emphasizes the general secretary of JUCIL.

Thus, it is not surprising that the recent publication of Organic Law 6/2024 has reactivated the concern of the civil guards stationed in Navarra. Therefore, they demand clear answers, a detailed schedule of the process and the explicit commitment of the Minister of the Interior to save the interests of the affected agents. “We are here to defend the rights of our colleagues and ensure that your professional future is not at the mercy of political decisions that do not contemplate the real impact on their lives,” concludes Vilariño.
