Mari Carme Maza and Álex Roca are expecting their first child. The couple shared the news on Instagram on Monday, October 5, with a video in which they appeared hugging and showed an ultrasound. The announcement opens a new stage in a relationship that began in 2017 and about which both have spoken publicly, also to respond to the prejudices they have encountered along the way.
One of his most personal testimonies came during his visit to “El Hormiguero” on May 15, 2023. Before Pablo Motos, Maza explained that he had gone through a stage in which he did not want to continue living and spoke of the change he had experienced afterwards. “I went from wanting to die to wanting to live”she expressed when remembering what it had meant for her to meet the athlete.
Those words belong to the interview from 2023. Then, Maza wanted to share a part of his story that had remained behind his appearances with Roca, whom he also accompanies as a sign language interpreter.
The support of your family and the beginning of the relationship
During the conversation, the social educator acknowledged that years before she had wanted to take her own life. Explaining how his situation had changed, he stressed the importance of his parents and Alex. His story was a thank you to the people who had been by his side and a description of his personal experience.
They met at an athlete conference in Barcelona. Maza was in the audience and that same night he decided to write to her on Facebook. That first message gave way to a friendship and, later, a relationship.
In the program he said that at first he had doubts, among other reasons because I still didn’t know sign language. Her mother encouraged her to give herself the opportunity to get to know him better. Over time, Maza learned to communicate with him and also began to accompany him in his conferences and interviews.
His response to those who questioned their relationship
The interview also left room to talk about the comments he received for being with Roca. Maza explained that some people questioned his motives and related his presence with the athlete to the notoriety he had achieved.
She remembered that I had known him long before that public exhibition and that the two had worked to give visibility to their story. In the face of other people’s opinions, he defended what they shared in their daily lives. “Let them say what they want because we at home know what we have,” he said.
His intervention allowed us to know his own perspective on a relationship that was often told through Álex’s sporting achievements. Maza spoke about the initial doubts, the support of his surroundings and the happiness he found with his partner.
The arrival of your first child
The couple got married on July 31, 2022. Now, nine years after meeting, she is preparing to welcome her first child. Fatherhood was one of the wishes that Roca had shared publicly.
The athlete, who has a 76% physical disabilitycompleted the Barcelona Marathon in 2023. His sporting challenges are now joined by a family project on which he has also explained how he would like to act. He wants to let his son try and make mistakes, but know that he will have his father by his side.
The video with which they announced the pregnancy shows that shared moment, hugging and with the ultrasound in their hands, before beginning to tell a new part of their life together.
