Less plastic bags, more commitment to the planet

Plastic bags, which have been part of everyday life for decades due to their low cost and convenience, have also become one of the most visible symbols of environmental pollution. Its massive use and poor waste management have meant that millions of units end up every year in seas, rivers and natural spaces, where they harm fauna, degrade ecosystems and pose increasing risks to human health.

Although the useful life of a plastic bag is usually between 12 and 15 minutes, its degradation can last between 50 and 500 years, according to different studies and estimates managed by international organizations. In this long process it fragments into microplastics, tiny particles that have already been detected in water, air and in the food chain.

Institutions such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the European Environment Agency have been warning for years that plastic pollution is not just a waste problem, but a structural threat linked to the current model of production and consumption. Furthermore, its effects are not limited to marine or river ecosystems, but indirectly affect human health and climate balance.

A residue that leaves a mark

The environmental impact of plastic bags does not begin when they are thrown away. Its manufacturing depends largely on petroleum derivatives, a non-renewable resource, and its production, distribution and treatment generate greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to aggravating the climate crisis. Hence, the United Nations insists on addressing plastic pollution from a broader perspective, which includes both the reduction of consumption and the transformation of production systems.

The magnitude of the problem reflects this urgency. Every year hundreds of billions of plastic bags are consumed in the world, and in the European Union their use continues to exceed 100 billion annually. Despite awareness campaigns, regulatory restrictions and advances in recycling, the volume of waste generated continues to be far greater than the effective management capacity.

Europe advances, but unevenly

For years, the European Union has maintained the objective of drastically reducing the use of single-use plastics and moving towards a more circular consumption model. In the case of light plastic bags, the general trend points to a sustained reduction, although with still very marked differences between countries.

According to the most recent data from Eurostat, in 2023 each inhabitant of the European Union consumed an average of 65 light plastic bags, compared to 67 in 2022 and 95 in 2018. The evolution confirms a progressive improvement, but the community average is still above the objective set by European regulations, which establishes a maximum of 40 bags per person.

The disparities between Member States remain notable. Belgium recorded the lowest consumption, with 4 bags per inhabitant, while Latvia presented the highest, with 209. Along with Belgium, other countries such as Poland, Portugal, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany are already below the European objective or very close to achieving it.

In the case of Spain, the most relevant data is the intensity of the decrease in its use. Between 2018 and 2023 it reduced its consumption by 104 bags per person, which places it among the countries that have made the most progress in this period. Even so, experts remember that the challenge is not only to consume fewer bags, but to globally reduce dependence on disposable plastics.

Beyond recycling

Specialized organizations agree that recycling, by itself, is not enough to solve the problem. A significant part of the plastic bags escapes the appropriate collection and treatment circuits, and another ends up fragmenting in the environment. For this reason, both the OECD and UNEP insist on prioritizing prevention, reuse and reduction of consumption over solutions focused solely on the end of the chain.

In this debate, the alternatives also require nuances. Biodegradable bags are not always a definitive answer, since in many cases they require specific conditions to degrade or shift part of the impact to the production process. Reusable bags made of fabric or durable materials are still generally considered a more sustainable option, as long as they are used for a long time and regularly.
