It will be another day of tropical nights and daytime highs of 38 degrees

The episode of anomalous temperatures that the mercury has installed in midsummer records does not yield and this Friday will add a new chapter to a week that will go down in the archives for its intensity and persistence. The State Meteorological Agency has updated its prediction for the day of May 29, 2026 and the diagnosis maintains the tone of exceptionality: the maximums will shoot up again to around the 38 degrees in points of the valleys of the Tagus, the Ebro, the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir, while the minimums will consolidate another tropical night in much of the eastern and southern half of the country.

The table of provincial capitals that accompanies the official notice leaves some records eloquent of what waits on the street, with Saragossa as the highest value when reaching the 39 degrees, closely followed by Lleida, Seville and Badajozwhich will share a maximum of 38and Toledowhich will remain in 37. The Cantabrian provinces, on the other hand, will breathe a little easier, with Oviedo and Santander hanging around the 25 and 22 degrees respectively, which represents one of the few exceptions within a map dominated by warm tones.

The focus of extreme heat is concentrated in the valleys

The prediction details that the 34-36 degrees They will be generally exceeded in the northeastern third of the peninsula, the southern half of the Atlantic slope, the areas of the eastern façade and the interior of Mallorca.

The rise of the maxims will continue in the Balearic Islands and in the south and east of the Peninsula, while the minimums also will gain ground in most of the territory, except in Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and western Andalusia, where few or even slight changes are expected descents. The AEMET insists that temperatures continue “in high values for the time in most of the country”, a technical formula that describes an atmosphere more typical of the dog days than the final stretch of May.

Tropical nights and isolated afternoon storms

The night chapter deserves a separate line because the thermometer will resist to drop below 20 degrees in points of the Southern plateau, the depressions of the northeast of the peninsula, the coasts of the eastern façade and the Balearic Islands.

This circumstance, together with the general stability that will keep the skies slightly cloudy or clear, will make it difficult to rest in numerous cities. The only alteration foreseen in the atmospheric script will arrive in the afternoon, when clouds of evolution grow in mountains and surrounding areas of the center and northern halfwith some isolated showers or storms that could be locally strong and accompanied by hail in the Cantabrian Mountains, the upper Ebro and northern Iberia.

The wind, on the other hand, will blow loose in most of the country, with a moderate easterly wind in the Strait and a strong trade wind in the Canary Islands, where temperatures will remain outside the peninsular warm episode.
