The hantavirus outbreak detected on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which set sail from Ushuaia (Argentina) bound for Cape Verde, has left three dead and has ignited health alerts internationally, in a context that evokes the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.
There were 13 passengers and one crew member of Spanish nationality on board, including five residents of Catalonia. The ship docked in Tenerife last Sunday around 7:00 a.m., at which time the evacuation of passengers began, a process that was completed between Sunday and Monday.
The Spanish citizens have been transferred to the Gómez Ulla Hospital, in Madrid, where they are quarantined. One of the 14 passengers has tested positive in two PCR tests and remains admitted to the High Level Isolation and Treatment Unit (UAAN). The rest of the contacts, both from the cruise and subsequent flights, continue under monitoring and preventive isolation.
