Google announced the most significant redesign of its iconic search box in a quarter of a century, transforming it into an interface powered by its new artificial intelligence (AI)Gemini 3.5 Flash.
At the Google I/O developer conference, the American technology giant explained that the new search engine is designed to “expand and adapt intuitively to the user’s needs,” by allowing it to describe requirements in a more natural, longer and complex language.
“The smart search box puts our most powerful AI tools at your fingertips, making it easier to ask questions,” said Liz Reid, vice president and head of Google Search, from Shoreline Amphitheater, an outdoor auditorium located just outside the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.
The system will move away from traditional autocomplete to offer advanced AI-based suggestions.
In addition, the search engine will natively accept multimedia inputs, allowing searches that combine text, images, videos, files, and Chrome tabs.
As part of this “new chapter for the search engine,” Google will unify AI Overviews and AI Mode (which it announced at I/O last year) into a single screen, available globally for both mobile and desktop devices.

In a roundtable with journalists, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that “what’s extraordinary about Search is how it continues to evolve to meet user expectations.”
In that sense, Pichai noted that, in the last three years, with the boom in AI, users make longer queries, with more voice queries or even with the use of images and videos.
“To me, Search is the most used AI product in the world and it is being used more than ever, and we are evolving super hard to stay one step ahead of where users want us to be,” Pichai concluded.
The rollout of this new smart search box will begin to be implemented globally in all countries and languages where Google AI Mode is available.
