In 21st century wars, a drone that fits in a backpack can pose as serious a threat as a fighter jet. The problem is that it appears without warning and can do so while an entire army is on the move. Today the panorama is much more complex. A modern military can simultaneously confront reconnaissance drones, kamikaze drones, helicopters, fighter jets, cruise missiles and even swarms of unmanned vehicles. The problem is not just detecting them. It also has to be done while the troops advance.
This need has driven a new generation of mobile air defense systems, capable of moving alongside ground units and providing almost instantaneous protection. Germany has just presented one of the most recent examples: the IRIS-T SLS MK 4, an evolution of its well-known IRIS-T family of anti-aircraft systems. Basically an “iron dome on wheels.”
Traditionally, an air defense system requires several vehicles: one for the radar, another for the command center and others for the missile launchers. The new IRIS-T SLS MK 4 brings all these elements together in a single mobile platform. Radar, command and control system, sensors and missiles travel together.
According to Diehl Defence, the German company responsible for the project, the goal is to have an “all-in-one” solution capable of being quickly deployed wherever it is needed. The high automation of the system also reduces the number of operators required and allows for rapid response to unexpected threats. The idea is reminiscent of the evolution of mobile phones. What previously required several separate devices (phone, camera, GPS navigator or music player) ended up being concentrated in a single device. The IRIS-T SLS MK 4 follows a similar philosophy applied to the battlefield.
The war in Ukraine has revealed a challenge that barely existed a few decades ago. Drones are relatively cheap, can attack in large numbers and require constant surveillance. In some cases, a device worth a few thousand euros can threaten vehicles or infrastructure worth millions.That is why modern air defense systems are no longer designed solely to intercept aircraft. They must be able to detect and neutralize much smaller and more difficult to locate targets.
The new German system is specifically designed to protect moving troops and critical infrastructure from low-altitude aerial threats. Its effective range is around 12 kilometers and it can intercept targets at heights of up to 6 kilometers.Perhaps one of the most striking features of the project is a capability called “fire-on-the-move.” In simple terms, it means that the vehicle will be able to launch missiles without having to come to a complete stop.
It may seem like a minor detail, but it represents an important advantage in an environment where staying still increases the chances of being located and attacked. It’s the military equivalent of trying to change a tire while the car is running: a technically complex task, but one that offers enormous operational advantage when achieved.
To do this, it uses the IRIS-T missile, a projectile originally designed for air-to-air combat and later adapted for launch from the ground. This missile forms the core of several European defense systems and has proven highly effective in service. Military strategists often compare air defense to an onion. The most effective protection does not depend on a single system, but on several superimposed layers capable of intercepting threats at different distances.
Short-range systems act as the last line of defense. Beyond them operate medium and long-range systems capable of detecting and destroying threats before they approach. The IRIS-T SLS MK 4 is precisely part of that stepped architecture developed by Germany and other European countries.
