Denmark It is studying building an artificial island in the North Sea, about 50 miles from the Jutland Peninsula, to centralize and distribute the electricity generated by hundreds of offshore wind turbines.
According to the Danish Energy Agency, the project contemplates an initial capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW), expandable to 10 GW by 2040. enough to supply about 10 million European homes. The infrastructure would come into operation from 2036three years later than originally planned.
The energy platform would have a minimum area of almost 1.3 million square feet and would be connected by high-voltage undersea cables to Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium and the United Kingdom. It would function as a distribution center that would collect electricity generated by offshore wind farms to send it to land.
A multi-million dollar project
The main challenge of the initiative is its high cost, estimated at more than 210 billion Danish crowns, equivalent to between $33,000 and $35,000 million.
Of that amount, around $11.7 billion would go toward construction of the island and its docks, while the rest would finance wind farms and electrical interconnections.
Current estimates also contemplate a cost overrun of approximately 50 billion Danish crowns, equivalent to about $7.8 billion, compared to initial calculations.
The expected environmental impact
In addition to distributing electricity, part of the energy generated on the island would be used to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, with the aim of supplying sectors such as maritime transport and aviation.
The project aims to integrate offshore wind energy generation between several countries in northern Europe through an international network of high-voltage submarine cables.
Although the construction would have an impact on the seabed and fauna in the area, authorities plan to implement mitigation measures, including converting protection barriers into artificial reefs to promote biodiversity.
Likewise, offshore hydrogen production would reduce the need to develop infrastructure on land and reduce pressure on coastal ecosystems.
If the projected capacity is reached, the island would avoid the emission of up to 20 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) per year.
The project is still under evaluation
Denmark continues to evaluate the technical, financial and environmental feasibility of the initiative, which is part of an international agreement to boost offshore wind energy in Europe and is supported by countries such as Germany, France and the Netherlands.
The Danish Energy Agency believes that the project could mark a before and after in European energy development. However, its execution will depend on the evolution of costs, international support and obtaining the necessary environmental permits.
For now, the artificial island continues to be one of the most ambitious renewable energy projects proposed in Europe.
