Ahmed al Charaa, the leader of the insurgent coalition that overthrew deposed Syrian President Bashar al Assad and known as the nom de guerre of Abu Mohamed al Jolani, has announced that it will publish a list of former senior officials “involved in the torture of the Syrian people” and has promised to hunt down “war criminals” and hold them accountable.
The leader of the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) began talks with the ousted government on Monday for the transfer of power, a day after its opposition alliance overthrew the President Bashar al-Assad after decades of dictatorial government. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali told Al-Arabiya television that he had agreed to hand over power to the rebel “salvation government.”
Rebel fighters announced that they have found about 40 bodies with signs of torture inside the morgue of a hospital near Damascus, stuffed into body bags with numbers and sometimes names written on them, AFP reported.
Meanwhile, Thousands of Syrians continue to return to their homes after years of displacement inside and outside the country. It is estimated that nearly 4.5 million people living in northwestern Syria have not been able to see their families in government-controlled territory for years.
