Girls from seventh to ninth grade will be able to apply for the program starting this Saturday. Seeds of Triumph of the organization Science Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) for the 2024-2025 school year, in which they will be able to develop in the disciplines STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and benefit their communities.
“We know that many girls want a profession for their future in which they can help other people. Semillas de Triunfo is the program that allows them to learn, through its activities and resources, the value of science at the service of society and also makes it easier for them to put it into practice.”said the doctor Greetchen Diazdirector of the Science Education and Community Alliances Program at CienciaPR, in a statement.
The free program offers students from public and private schools and homeschoolers residing in Puerto Rico an educational curriculum called “From Seed of Success to STEM Ambassador,” which provides the opportunity to deeply explore careers in STEM, meet leaders universities and professionals in these disciplines and exercise their leadership through the development of scientific communication projects in their schools and/or communities.
Semillas de Triunfo, which began in 2015, has managed to impact more than 61,000 people from all over Puerto Rico through the scientific dissemination projects that the young students have carried out.
The educational initiative will be carried out from August to May of the 2024-2025 school year with activities in hybrid mode (virtual and in-person).
The young women, who will receive a welcome package with all the necessary materials, will participate in several workshops on leadership, self-esteem, and scientific and computer experiments. In addition, they will be able to visit research laboratories or industrial facilities.
Likewise, they will have the opportunity to meet women leaders in STEM and role models, residents inside and outside of Puerto Rico, through in-person activities, the online talk series Juntas Podemos and the Virtual Collection of Latinas in STEM . This collection includes, among other women, the mentors participating in the program.
“The girls who participate in Semillas de Triunfo will be assigned a remote mentor for individual and group mentoring. These mentors are Latina women from various sectors and levels of experience. that will help them design their project and explore opportunities for their future,” highlighted, meanwhile, Dr. Liz Hernandezprogram manager.
Upon completion of their project, the participants will become part of the group of STEM Ambassadors Class 2024-2025 of CienciaPR.
Girls interested in participating in the Semillas de Triunfo program must go through an application process that consists of two parts: (1) complete the application form available online at this linkon or before May 10, and (2) participate in an online orientation on April 11 or watch the recording on the CienciaPR portal before May 10.
A total of 120 students residing in Puerto Rico will be selected. In addition, all young women who apply will have access to complementary activities, such as online events and workshops, webinars, digital resources and a newsletter.
