There is a scene that has been repeated for decades. A person sits in front of a screen, takes a controller with both hands and starts playing. The body remains practically motionless while the fingers do all the work. The evolution of video games has achieved more realistic graphics, larger worlds and increasingly complex experiences, but there is something that has barely changed: to play, you usually have to stay still. Blackview, a renowned manufacturer of rugged mobile phones and charging stations, has decided to turn that idea around.

His PlayPop 8presented at IFA 2026, is not a portable console nor does it aim to compete with large traditional machines. It is a small cubic box that connects to the television via HDMI and uses artificial intelligence and a camera to convert body movements into in-game commands. You don’t have to hold a controller: you have to stand in front of the screen and move.

The proposal is reminiscent of something that video games already tried years ago, but with an important difference. Instead of using specific accessories to detect movements, PlayPop 8 uses a 17-point based body tracking system that identifies body positions in real time. Jumping, crouching, moving your arms or dancing can become in-game actions.

It is, in a way, an inversion of the traditional relationship between player and machine. For decades we have designed controllers so that the body can communicate with the video game using less and less movement: buttons, joysticks, triggers, touch surfaces. Blackview proposes eliminating that intermediary. The body is the control. And that also changes where the game occurs.

PlayPop 8 is designed to be placed next to the television or even connected to a monitor or projector. The company recommends placing it between 40 and 140 centimeters above the ground so that the camera can track it correctly. For one person to play, the ideal distance is around 1.5 meters; If several participate, it increases to between 2 and 3 meters.

The room thus stops being a simple place where the screen is and becomes part of the game. It’s a small difference on paper, but important from a design point of view. A traditional video game builds a virtual world that we enter by looking at a screen. PlayPop 8 tries to do something different: bring part of the virtual interaction to the physical space we are in.

The company has also presented it as a family experience. The system allows up to four players and groups the content into six categoriesincluding family and party games, sports, fitness, adventures, casual games and logic and puzzle proposals. Blackview assures that it will add new content every quarter. The device includes five free initial games, while the entire catalog is articulated through a GamePass subscription.

Here another interesting aspect appears. At a time when there is growing concern about the time that children and adults spend sitting in front of screens, Blackview is trying to turn that screen into an incentive to get up. The company proposes andThe device for ages five and up and relates it to coordination, balance, motor skills, attention and cooperative play.

It does not mean that a console can replace physical exercise or that playing will solve the problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. But the idea is interesting: perhaps the solution to excess screen does not always have to be removing the screen. Sometimes it could consist of changing the physical relationship we have with it.

The PlayPop 8 has dimensions of just 76 × 76 × 76 millimeters and a weight of about 343 grams. Inside there is an eight-core Rockchip RK3576 processor accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and HDMI output, and the box also includes a remote control, although this is not necessary to play: it is mainly used for device control functions.

The camera is, however, the component that makes this little box something different. And there arises an especially relevant issue when a camera is introduced into the living room of a house: privacy. Blackview has opted for a solution that is as simple as it is physical. PlayPop 8 incorporates a shutter that physically covers the camera when not in use. Additionally, the company claims that the data needed for AI body tracking is processed locally and that no facial data is sent to the cloud or stored.

It’s a significant decision because the product needs to see us to work. The more capable a camera is of interpreting our body, the more important it is to know what happens to what it is capturing. In this case, Blackview has chosen to not have part of the answer depend solely on a software setting: if the camera is physically covered, you can’t see.

There is also a small irony in this product coming from Blackview. The company became known precisely for its rugged phones and tablets, devices designed to bring technology to places where conditions are more difficult. Now it brings a different technology to the living room with an almost opposite mission: get the user to leave the refuge of the sofa for a while. PlayPop 8 therefore belongs to a curious category. It is not exactly a conventional console, nor is it a fitness platform, much less a simple video game camera. It’s an attempt to use artificial intelligence to make the boundary between player and game more physical.

And perhaps that is what is truly interesting about this little yellow cube. The next evolution of interfaces doesn’t have to be inventing another screen, another controller, or even another way to touch a surface. It may consist of something much older: moving. After decades trying to get machines to understand our fingers, Blackview wants to teach them to understand our bodies.
