From last Tuesday, September 1Social Security has changed its way of communicating with workers who are on sick leave. They must pay attention to the mailbox present in the electronic office to be able to know the status of both their application and the pension for temporary or permanent disability, although there are exceptions.
The objective of this measure is to increase the digitalization of the Public Administration, managing to stop sending important communications through paper letters to go to telematic mode. As appears in Order ISM/541/2026, of May 27, which modified the provisions of the previous 2020 order on Social Security notifications.
Specifically, it modifies the provisions of its article 4, which established that those “natural persons who are applicants or recipients due to birth and care of a minor, risk during pregnancy and deprivation during breastfeeding” would receive the communications of its benefits through the electronic office of the Administration.
10-day period to read notifications
The new order published in the BOE extends this article to all those workers who are in a situation of temporary or permanent disability or have permanent non-disabling injuries. These will receive all the news regarding their request, denial, extension or recognition of the benefit granted by the National Social Security Institute (INSS).
Citations for medical examinations will also appear in this mailbox. Likewise, the Administration has established a period of 10 days to be able to open and read the notifications issued, a period that, If fulfilled, the system will consider it readso, in some cases, it will mean the loss of the benefit or the loss of the deadlines to present allegations.
Therefore, it will be necessary to periodically review both the electronic headquarters and the mailbox within the My Citizen Folder website. To facilitate this task, Social Security has enabled a system that allows linking the email address and personal telephone number to send notifications via SMS or email.
How to access the electronic office
A measure that responds to the increasing digitalization of citizens, since “it is considered that these people, because they are incorporated into the work or professional world in which the possession and use of electronic devices is widespread, have sufficient knowledge and means to receive communications and notifications by electronic means“.
In order to access these notifications, it will be necessary to have a permanent cl@ve, mobile cl@ve, electronic DNI, electronic certificate or EU Citizens (eIDAS), tools that will allow secure identification at the electronic headquarters, at the Unique Enabled Electronic Address (DEHĂș) or on the My Citizen Folder website and app. However, those who do not have these codes they will also be able to receive communications.
Understanding that there are cases of workers who present difficulties in the digital environment, “the rule reinforces the possibility that they can be attended to in person in an office”, specifically in the Social Security Care and Information Centers (CAISS). In addition, notifications that cannot be digitized due to their importance or nature will continue to be sent in physical format to the address of its recipients.
