A whale lifeless was found in the last hours in the vicinity of the coast of Buenos Aires, almost a week after another cetacean’s body was found in a nearby areawithout even knowing the causes of their deaths.
The sighted whale late Monday It was struck in shallow waters of the Río de la Plata and several meters from the shoreon the northern coast of the Argentine capital.
Miguel Íñiguezholder of the Cethus FoundationHe told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the animal is young and of the SEI species, as was the one that was spotted on Wednesday of last week in waters that bathe the nearby municipality of Vicente López.
The SEI species is in danger of extinction, although for a few years its population is recovering. Adult specimens reach 20 meters in length.
The CETHUS Foundation and the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences jointly investigate the causes of death and the approximation of the two young cetaceans on the banks of the Río de la Plata.
The body of the first whale, which was sighted days ago, has been carried in a sea, to an area chosen by the Naval Prefecture authorities, after they were extracted samples for its study.
Several hypotheses about animal death are analyzed. “We do not know if on the immigration route they have diverted for some storm or by some disease, and that has weakened them taking them river inside, which is not their normal habitat, and there they have died; or if they have suffered any collision with boats,” explained the naturalist.
Argentina is part of the immigration route of these animals, from the waters of the South Atlantic to the Brazilian coasts. Young specimens are already independent and move in herds of two or three individuals.
It is unknown when the results of the studies carried out to the whales will be.
