The cold and night frosts will continue until Sunday, according to the prediction of the spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Rubén del Campo. Besides, A DANA will bring rainfall from Thursday until the weekend to areas of the Mediterranean. These rains will move towards Galicia and other areas of the western peninsula during the next weekwhen a rise in temperatures is expected.
“We have already reached the halfway point of the month of January and we do so in cold weather. Widespread frosts in the interior of the peninsula, which will continue throughout the week“, according to the AEMET spokesperson. Furthermore, Del Campo highlights that the approach of a DANA from the Mediterranean will cause an increase in instability in that area, with showers in the Balearic Islands and coastal communities, especially in the Valencian Community, where they could be locally intense and accompanied by storms. The precipitation will subside over the Mediterranean over the weekend, while fronts from the Atlantic will approach, leaving rain in Galicia on Sunday and in the following days in the west of the peninsula, accompanied by a rise in temperatures.
On Thursday there will be widespread frosts again, although perhaps somewhat less intense than on previous days. “It will no longer drop below five degrees below zero except in isolated points of the Northern Plateau and central moors, as well as in high mountain areas,” Del Campo specifies. The main news of the day will be the arrival of a DANA from the Mediterranean that will increase instability in the east, with showers in the Balearic Islands and also on the eastern coast of the peninsula. These precipitations can be stormy and locally strong in the afternoon in points in the south of the provinces of Valencia and north of Alicante. Besides, It could snow from about 700 meters in these areas of the peninsular Mediterranean and also in Mallorca.
Heavy rains in the Valencian Community
Friday will be a day very similar to Thursday, with showers in the peninsular Mediterranean area, which could extend a little further inland, as well as in the Balearic Islands. These showers could be locally strong, especially in parts of the Valencian Community. According to Meteored, More than 70-80 liters per square meter (l/m2) can be accumulated locally where the storms make landfall and in the regions north of Alicante and south of Valencia.where orographic retention will be key. In this last sector, the AEMET has activated the yellow notice for local accumulations of more than 20 l/m2 in one hour and more than 60 l/m2 in twelve. In the main mountain ranges such as Aitana, Mariola or Serrella, several centimeters of snow will fall, with lighter snowfall in the interior of Castellón. Regarding temperatures, the early morning frosts will be repeated, although the south of the peninsula will experience a slight rise in the minimum temperatures, while in the north and center they will remain at values similar to those of Thursday.
Time change starting Sunday
The DANA will move away on Saturday, so rains are only expected in the Balearic Islands, without ruling them out in isolated points on the peninsular Mediterranean coast. The sky will remain clear in the rest of the country, with more intense and extensive night frosts. The frost will continue on Sunday. Despite this, the AEMET spokesperson has announced that A change in the weather pattern will begin to be seen as the anticyclone that has kept the weather generally stable in much of Spain, except in the Mediterranean, weakens. Therefore, the way will be clear for Atlantic storms to begin to arrive.
In principle, on Sunday it will only rain in Galicia and perhaps even in the Balearic Islands. “On Monday and in the following days, the rains from the Atlantic will spread through the west and through the center of the peninsula, with temperatures that will also rise clearly as warmer winds arrive,” advances the spokesman for the AEMET. The frost will begin to subside on Sunday and, above all, on Monday, so that by the middle of next week there will probably no longer be sub-zero temperatures in most of Spain.
